Animal welfare.......100% yes.

Animals need to be protected by us, the beings, at the top of the food chain. However animals don't have rights, as they don't have the ability to employ, express and defend rights.

We as the supreme beings on this planet need to protect and nurture the animals in our care. The animals we use for food, need to be raised and housed well in a non-abusive manner and their lives need to be ended in a dignified and humane manner.

very very well said.

Well, even if they did, their contribution is still noted, even if they cut all meat EXCEPT gelatin from their diet, they are still making a difference, IMO it's not all or nothing.
The cruel meat industry is still losing business because of them, and that's all that matters.

I could not do vegan or vegetarian if I tried, I like meat.

However, I do support animal welfare. Animals provide a large number of services to us, including medical testing and since we can't take the despicable people of this world and use them instead, I support actions made to better the life of these animals.

I actually recently came to this conclusion. I was for the most part ignorant on most things and after a discussion on another pet forum, I came to a decision about the food I eat.

We're going organic. I support the methods used in organic farming, one of our local grocery store chains' organic milk/beef supplier has his own video blog of his cows on you tube. I've never seen cows skip before, but these cows are so happy and so well maintained and treated its worth the extra bucks to me to support his farming.

So I decided, instead of avoiding animal farming I'd rather take my money and support good ethical animal farming because IMO the only way to really work to overcome industrial cruel farming, is to direct cash flow to positive farming methods.

I also looked into local organic farms and where my eggs are coming from as well, I can't fathom the idea of an animal suffering to those extents just for me to eat, theres no reason for it.

I also do not support ideas of releasing animals to the wild, I know my dog would surely be eaten or hit by a car if left to her own devices. we created them, its not fair to them for us to not care for them (I've also been trying to find my way into working with animal rescue too) As well, I'm against the idea of nixing certain breeds due to owner ignorance for similar reasons.

I still have a long ways to go, and more researching to do, but thats where I stand as of recently

I haven't eaten pork or beef since I was a child, my choice. No one else I knew ate like that. Same thing today actually. I don't eat much chicken or deer, but will occasionally during the year, I am picky about the sources. I do eat a lot of wild caught fish. I have no aspirations to become vegan.
I love animals and am really into treating animals and the environment well, however, I do not in any way support PETA. It is kinda hard to live in a society where people view animals as disposable and do not treat them as well as they should, both pets and livestock animals.

Nope, no jello or marshmallows, etc. I read labels on things that I buy, because even in soups that "look" vegetarian, you'll find they include beef or chicken stock. My family goes back and forth on their support sometimes... my SIL made a casserole for a family get-together once and she told me that she had intended to make it vegetarian, but the only stock she had on hand was chicken stock. My mom's reply: "You just shouldn't have told her, she'd never have known the difference."
People don't understand that when you don't eat meat for many years, you absolutely CAN tell the difference. I went on a trip to Mexico a few years back, one of those all-inclusive resorts with basically buffet breakfasts and lunches. I knew right away that their mashed potatoes had chicken stock in them. I had to shelve my veggie diet for that week... or else I would have starved!!

I've been off reading some, somewhat, unrelated things tonight and came across this nice list of how many ways cattle by-products are used. Nice to know that so much of it is reused - better this than chemical/petroleum. Notice that soap, detergents - shampoo and conditioner are on that lists.
Of course, everyone knew about natural soap using animal fat, though.

I'm not trying to promote anything...but just wonder if many cat mommies and daddies are also vegetarians or vegans or are signed up to animal welfare forums etc. I'm also curious to get your views on animal rights and vegetarianism.
Hello salsero!

My girlfriend and I just joined this forum after we both became (very) fond of our kitties. These are the first cats we've had in our adult lives and the experience has been rewarding. To say the least.
I can't say that either of us has run out and joined an animal rights movement of any kind and we surely haven't changed our diet.
But we now both share an understanding for cats that we didn't have before.
And with that understanding came a great deal of respect.
So our perspectives have definitely changed. With a change in perspective, I guess you could make a solid argument that our lives have changed as well.
But I believe that a healthy diet is also important for cats and people alike.
It's just the way of things, I guess.
And like it or not our kitties (from what we're told) are suppose to grow up on a steady diet of meat.
At least that's what our vet said. So we make sure they all get at least one can of catfood a day as apposed to the dry stuff.

Which is to say, that we've come to respect animals in general because of our kitties. But we respect them the way they were meant to be and in so doing I think we'll keep meat on the menu. Well, I think I will.
Can't say for sure that my girlfriend will but she keeps nodding to me as if she is in agreement.

But I would like to add that because of our kitties we've become more active in supporting the local shelters and we speak out against animal cruelty whenever we get a chance.

Just to toss this in before I throw in my whole 2cents worth. When you go out to eat MOST restaurants especially chain restaurants cook their eggs and meats on seperate grills not that its the same for mom and pop restaurants. But if you go somewhere like Perkins or Dennys 9 times out of ten if their cooks are trained correctly and managers follow procedure their omelettes and eggs are done on an "egg grill" and meats done on a completely different grill. They may be side by side but they are still seperated by the grill walls and are still a completely seperate grill. I had to share that just to help kind of put your mind at ease. ALSO you can request that your omelette be made on a cleaned area. I had a lot of customers do that and as long as your polite about it and up front your waitress will have no problem explaining that to the cook and having your food made up the way you want it. Atleast if I were your waitress Id stress it to the cook and then hound them about it to make sure it was done properly and then make sure your food was seperated from the others so noone mistakenly took it to another table and then wa-la you have your food made your way

Anyways back on topic. I do eat meat. I dont eat a lot of red meat just because sometimes it bugs me because I see those cute little faces and I cant bring myself to eat a cow. However I have no problem eating chicken because I think chickens are ugly and annoying. It makes no sense but thats just how I feel about it. In one month BF and I may eat about 3 lbs of hamburger but about 10 lbs of chicken breast.
I do support animal welfare because I just cant stand to see anything mistreated. Even chickens I felt bad because some people down the road from us have free range chickens they raise and one got hit by a car. It bummed me out driving past it. I dont care for extreme animal rights activists some of the things they do just down right irritate me. To each their own I guess.

This thread made me and my girlfriend wonder, do the vegetarians with cats force the cats to live on a vegetarian diet as well?

Some do. Accidentally stumbling on one of those sites, it seems some of the main premade vegetarian diets can cause UTI issues in cats.

Yes some people do, it is dangerous for the cats!!! I used to be a member of a vegan forum because I had a raw vegan phase, I never meant for it to be a lifelong thing though...Some people will feed vegan cat food, IMO it's the worst thing you can do for your cat.
There is even a site selling vegan cat food

I know someone who thinks mini doxie's are ugly and annoying. Or people who think babies are ugly and annoying. Neither are reasons for consuming them!

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. I don't eat pork for religious reasons, and in college, I worked in the cafeteria. The kitchen staff was always trying to slip ham or bacon into something and get myself or other non-pork eating staff to taste it.

Now that I'm mainly vegetarian, I just bring my own dish to family functions and company parties, and eat from that and the veggie platter. Great for my diet, not so great for my tummy
Some people just don't *get* what it is to have dietary restrictions. My grandmother (whom I love dearly) knows I don't eat pork, yet she'll serve me bean soup, because it's just ham broth, no actual bits in it. Now I cook everything for her when I go to visit just to make sure.

I'm guilty of slipping veggies into anything I can. DH is very picky and complains - especially about celery. I honestly don't see anything bad about forcing vegetables on people unless they have an allergy.

Of course, in DH's case, it has been good for him. He now eats bell peppers, onions, eggplant, cooked celery, non-fried squash and zucchini, broccoli (without cheese), cauliflower, and even cabbage. I even got him to try and admit that raw cucumbers wouldn't kill him and didn't taste bad.

I agree about chickens. I had a traumatic childhood experience involving a chicken beak and my nose.

EAT MOR CHICKEN!!

I eat meat but I wouldn't eat a house pet. If PETA represents 'animal rights' groups I'll limit my animal rights activity to allowing them to vote.

Would not even cross my mind, as I said before my cats are all raw fed. I probably buy more meat than most meat eaters

I realised I posted about animal rights vs welfare and didn't answer the question

I eat meat and am for animal welfare and not the animal rights groups that do more harm than good.

I don't know anyone who doesn't eat vegetables for religious reasons though
