From his television show in 1969 ... he was a comedian, but this was serious ...

That was great. I am glad I watched it.

Awesome. I actually remember him doing that. This should be required watching for everyone on both sides of the political spectrum.

I've seen it a number of times. We used to watch Red every week; my mother loved him. Did you know his wife was shot in a bank hold up?

I think it's important to remember that the "under God" portion of the Pledge was added in the 1950's, at the behest of those who wanted to clearly distinguish us from the "godless communists."

We need more people like Red in this country - God-fearing and has good morals to stand up for the truth. And sad to say how far downhill this great country has come and where its heading - in the opposite direction.

The current administration is determined to destroy what this country was built on and destroy ALL of our freedoms we now have. I know Red must be crying his eyes out to see what has happened.

He was one of my most fav comedians ever - and a person with good character and one that should be admired in all he did.

I used to enjoy watching Red Skelton as a child. They're not making them like him anymore.
He did a nice job on 'O Canada' too by the way.

The current administration?

Quote:
Following are examples of freedoms which President Bush and his fellow Republicans in Congress have already expunged (as reported by the Associated Press):

FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION: Government may monitor religious and political institutions without suspecting criminal activity to assist terror investigations.

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION: Government has closed once-public immigration hearings, has secretly detained hundreds of people without charges, and has encouraged bureaucrats to resist public records questions.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH: Government may prosecute librarians or keepers of any other records if they tell anyone that the government subpoenaed information related to a terror investigation.

RIGHT TO LEGAL REPRESENTATION: Government may monitor federal prison jailhouse conversations between attorneys and clients, and deny lawyers to Americans accused of crimes.

FREEDOM FROM UNREASONABLE SEARCHES: Government may search and seize Americans' papers and effects without probable cause to assist terror investigation.

RIGHT TO A SPEEDY AND PUBLIC TRIAL: Government may jail Americans indefinitely without a trial.

RIGHT TO LIBERTY: Americans may be jailed without being charged or being able to confront witnesses against them.

and this one.

I notice Barack did not repeal The Patriot Act.

But, at least Bush didn't try to get his hands on all American's emails, that kind of sucks that Barack is doing that. Good thing Yahoo and Google told him to "shove it".

Oh and Barack wants to be able to tap in on your cell phone conversations without a warrant also. I'm sure that is okay, though, since it is Barack.

On a related note, this made me think of this recent NPR piece:

I Pledge Allegiance To Linguistic Obfuscation

The Pledge of Allegiance, according to Wikipedia, has been modified 4 times since 1892.

See http://www.ushistory.org/documents/pledge.htm for details.

The Original version:
I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The current version of the Pledge of Allegiance reads:
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Note - the Pledge is to the Flag of the United States of America, AND to the Republic - not the democracy.

<><><><><><><>
The next version to come out might go something like this: (a work in progress)

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the World, and to the Nations for which it stands. One united nations beholding to the Rulers that give the stupid public the handouts for survival now that all their labors are taxed so much that they must depend on wealth distribution to provide their meager existence ..."

well, I think I could do better, but ran out of time - maybe someone else could develop the new Pledge for the 21st Century?

A shame that one has been kicked so hard to the curb

I never said Obama's administation isn't doing things that I don't like. I just get tired of people blaming all the ills in this country on the Democrats. I think its been a bi-partisan effort, perhaps the only bi-partisan thing they've ever done. And, for the record, I'm not a member of the Democratic party. I voted for Obama because I thought he was the better candidate and I had hopes for his potential, not because I thought he was any kind of messiah or savior. I'm capable of being disgusted by both parties - right now the Republicans just happen to be disgusting me a little bit more.
