changed toilet habits - HELP!

Hi,

My cat is now 10 months old and we've had him since a kitten - we've never had any toileting problems with him at all and we were so thankful of that -

but just yesterday he went to his tray to pee as usual but then defecated on the couch - unfortunately he has done the same thing again this morning in the same place -

nothing has changed - his tray is still in the same place as always with the same litter - I can't understand it and don't know how to stop him from doing this as I can't shut him out the living room!

Why start doing this now when he has ALWAYS used his tray before?

Any advice would be appreciated - please?

Your dear cat is growing up. I believe he falls in the category of cats that prefer one tray for urinating and another for defecating. I suggest you get another litter box.

Any change in litterbox behavior warrants a trip to the vet to rule out any medical problems. Adding a second litterbox is a good idea, but definitely get to the vet, too.

Vet check excellent idea - in the meantime, another box is a great idea, and using an enyzme cleaner on the accident spot is good too - to remove the scent of the accident. And, I know it's tough, but try to be patient and calm with your boy - he's not being 'bad' on purpose, but trying to tell you something. He may be ill, or just not happy with the litter box situation, and it may take a while to figure out what. But, he will pick up on your stress levels, and that might make him even more stressed, and prone to 'accidents'.

Oh, I've had great luck with a litter called Cat Attract when my boy had box issues. Sometimes if they're uncomfortable when pooing or peeing, they do associate the box or the litter with the discomfort - and you have to make it a happy association again. The Cat Attract seems to lure them back in many cases.

Good luck - I know this isn't easy on any of you.
