Question Heavy Breathing

Thread Starter
My boy cat is 5 years old. For the past two years when he is relaxing I can hear him breathing. He does not stick out his tongue or pant - it is just loud breathing. He is playful, eating and health weight considering his breed. I think he is Maine Coon mix based on his tail and overall look.

When he was checked by vet a year ago the doctor said he was fine. The heavy breathing is not progressive.

The Question: Would anyone recommend I take him to a specialist or is this just a case of me looking for something to worry about?

Thanks!

A worried Kitty Mom!

He may just be snoring, but it wouldn't hurt to get a chest x-ray to be safe and make sure its not asthma.

He's beautiful!

The above is what I was thinking ...

It's good that it doesn't seem to be progressing, but this is obviously very upsetting for you to hear. It could be nothing, or it could be something that you need to catch early. Talk to your vet about it in depth, maybe via phone or by email and see if they think more needs to be done to investigate this.

I agree with the others; talking again with your vet (or getting a second opinion) is not a bad idea.

He's a very striking cat, by the way!

I don't want to scare you, because it doesn't sound like the same thing, but my Carmalita started breathing heavy one day...and I thought it was because it was hot in the apartment. I went about my business, and about 45 minutes later I realized she was in the bathtub, panting. This was bad news.

I rushed her to the Emergency Vet, and it was too late. They have no idea what it was, and I honestly wish I knew, I feel as though it was my fault. But they said it could have been a fast-growing tumor. I really don't know.

She was breathing fast and heavy, and later on, with her mouth open, so it doesn't sound the same to me. But either way, like the others said, maybe an x-ray would put your mind at ease.

Hi - thanks for the responses. I need to take his sister on for her shots so I will grill the vet then. If he seems at all worried will take him to a specialist.

Also thanks for the compliments on my handsome boy - as a photographer he and his sister are my favorite subjects! Although I think they prefer not being models.
