Hi all
I thought I would start a thread on the names of your cats and why you chose to call them what you did, I just thought it would make interesting read

My cats are

Candy-I really couldn't think of a name for her and we had just gotten a new fridge freezer made by Candy and it just seemed perfect

Fudge,Floss and Smartie, we decided to keep in with the sweet theme and the names suit them all perfectly, all though I call Floss "Flo"

Billy, I am not sure, it just seemed to suit him down to the ground and he certainly knows his name.

Matt named the older ones so...

Magnum is named after Magnum P.I. because he investigated everything when he broke into his apartment (clawed the screen on the window and made himself at home)

Boomer is named after his booming meow

Bumper hitched a ride home from a fair in the bumper of the truck, he is very lucky he survived the ride home on the highway. It became even more apt when we thought he might be blind because he bumps into walls occasionally, but he isn't blind, he just hopes he can walk through the walls obviously

Autumn was named by the shelter, we did change it to Penny but it never stuck, after calling her Autumn for so long at the shelter it was second nature. We call her Princess more than Autumn though because she acts like a princess.

Quincy, we had trouble naming, so we were reading names out of a cat name website to him and he responded to Quincy and we stuck with it.

Hydrox - after the cookie. We thought of Oreo, but then my son's friend named her kitty Oreo, so we went with Hydrox. (He was also known as The Old Coot; he was 20 when he died)

Whisper - when she first came into the house she was very quiet. Hah! We should have named her Screamer! Also, she's an all-grey kitty and when she sits in the bay window in the living room, you can't even see her because she blends in so well with the background. You have to right outside the window to see her. (Her nickname is Stealth Kitty for that reason.)

Bootser - started out as Boots, but it became Bootser, Bootser (yes, said twice)

BooBoo - when he was a kitten, he looked like a bear cub. But he didn't look like a Yogi, so he became BooBoo. (He is also known as BooBoo Bibberman, Buddy-Boo, and Mr. Boo.)

Ms. Pepe - our little split-face tortie. DH named her Ms. Pepe after Pepe Le Pew. And it is Ms. Pepe, not Miss Pepe (took our vet awhile to figure that out). (She is also known as Pepe, The PepMonster, The Pepper-Girl, and Mish Pep.)

Mollipop - you all know her story. After visiting with her one night at the vet, I came home and was doing laundry. I always sing to myself when I'm doing household chores (if I don't have music playing) and I was singing "Lollipop, Lollipop, oh Lolly-Lollipop" only the one time it came out, "Mollipop". And I thought, "That's it! That's her name!" And doggone it, she looks like a Mollipop now. (Although I keep calling her Schnooker-Jo when she gets into something and I have to get her out......and I don't know why. DH hates Schnooker-Jo, so when I do that he starts calling her PolliMop. The poor girl isn't going to know what her name really is! Although she does come to me when I say, Mollipop.)

Banshee - (She's at the Rainbow Bridge and, I'm sorry, but I cannot not include her when I'm talking about our kids....I just can't) when she was a kitten, she had lungs bigger than she was. She certainly knew how to scream. Our son looked at me one night after she was here about three days and said, "Mom, she screams like a Banshee!" and well, there you go. (She was also known as The Queen B, Tootseroni, Baby Girl, and Mama's Girl. When DH talked about her to me, he would always say Your Girl because she truly was.)

We started giving our cats just regular cat names, Fluffy, Scooter, Pepper, because every time we would give a lot of thought to a cool name, (mostly from music related things) something bad would happen to it. Pearl is the longest living one, having been named for Janis Joplin's alter ego, Pearl.

Louie Da Lip - started life as Furball, graduated to the Lipless Wonder when he survived his facial injuries, and to Louie Da Lip when he started slaughtering mice at a startling rate.
Jack - he came with that name
Hissy - the only sound she made for years was hissing, it wasn't until a couple of years ago that she actually meowed
Streak - has a streak of white down his back
Tippy - white tip on his tail
Zabbie - inappropriately named Pansy as a kitten, never answered to it, only came to Wherrrzzaaababeeeee, and that got shortened to Zabbie
Skinny - a kitten stolen from somewhere along with his twin, Minnie. Minnie got kicked an didn't survive
Splash - his face looks like someone slapped him in the snoot with a brushful of paint
Da Magpie - Started out as Spots because she had three white spots on her tail...when she started hunting and catching mice before they got behond the porch and started hiding shiny stuff, she earned the name Da Magpie.
Gimpy - a parttime resident who showed up with an abscessed foot, and now that he moved back to his own yard, he is still called Gimpy by his real family

I really have no imagination

My cats have full names! Jon said he wanted to name Cammy after a streetfighter character. I was like "No way!" and then he started naming the girl characters and I really liked Cammy! One night he said "What's Cammy's full name?" I said "I don't know, what do you think?" He immediately said "Camantha Jane Sparkles," and that stuck. That's her in trouble name. We also call her Cammy Jane.

Abbey's name came from the Beatles album Abbey Road. I wanted to name her after a Beatles song or something. Since Cammy had a full name, Abbey needed one too. I came up with Abbey Lucille Sprinkles. And we call her Abbey Lou.

Miss Moneypenny - Because James Bond was about the only thing I had in common with the man I was living with at the time. He didn't like any of the other names I picked. Suits her though, so I'm not complaining.

Little Cat - The cat of three names. I intended him to be a James, to go with Miss Moneypenny, however the name he came with was too great to let go - Calvin. After months of waffling back and forth on what his "real" name was, I realized that I'd just been calling him Little Cat the whole time anyway, and others were referring to him by it as well. While I think it's a horribly silly name for a cat and that someday I'll come around and decide on his "real" name, it's been a year now, so I'm afraid it might be stuck. It seems to me that it's a perfectly odd name for a perfectly odd cat. This is my half-deaf child who cannot abide things set on tables - they must be on the floor - and who sits in the corner and meows at the ceiling, or paws at the walls, or tries to jump to the top of the window. He's "special" :-D

(This from a woman who had a hamster named Hamster several years ago. I might be lacking the imaginative gene.)

Sweetie already had this name when I adopted him a year ago. I'm not sure who named him but I do know he was named for his temperment. He's a shy kitty around strangers, but when he knows and trusts you, he's the sweetest little boy!!!!!

Sneaky Pie- I named her. I was in the middle of reading Rita Mae Brown's mystery series. When my inlaws called and said they had a cat (and would we want it) I said ok. They said she was a tabby- so I thought of Sneaky Pie. Well- we got her and she's a tortishell tabby. The "real" Sneaky Pie is a grey tabby, and my Sneaky's got grey, and orange tabby on her (and white feet). Oh well- the name fits. She has got Sneaky Pie's "cat"ittude down to a "T". Though I still tell her she should be re-named Pewter b/c she's fat

HollyHeart- this is what the kids came up with. Told them when we were thinking about a cat that they could name her. At the time they were into the Warriors series. I liked Holly to begin with b/c we would have gotten her at Christmas if we weren't going to be away (my friend kept her until after the holidays)

In the book series the as the cats grow they go from a "kit" to something else to a Heart and finally a "star" when they pass on. But I told them they weren't changing the name of this pet every couple of months- so HollyHeart it was. She's long and all black. If she's not in trouble it's either "little cat" or Holly.

And finally the kitty that went over the rainbow bridge in August due to kidney failure
Mistoflees. He was "black from his ears to the tip of his tail". I told the kids when we got Holly that she was NOT going to be named Mistoflees the second. I just didn't want to go there.

My kitty's name is Tiger because he's 8 months old and 13 pounds. Gonna be the size of a Tiger when he's all growed up.

The cat at my parents house is called Kitty, due to our lack of creativity.

Siamie - our oldest. DH did not like any of the names I picked out for her, i.e. Persimmon, Potato, Pancake. So he chose the name and it fits - she is a color-point cat.

Speck - because he has spots - though they are not as prominent now as they were when he was a kitten. I picked out the name before I ever saw him. I knew what my cat would look like before I got him. I knew he'd have he'd be red and I knew he'd have spots. And believe it or not, we saw each other the minute I walked into the cat room at animal control. We exchanged looks, and I'm convinced he knew I was there for him. He wrinkled his forehead and studied me from his cage. I had been praying for a kitten after Redman was PTS and I think Speck was meant to be the one. Speck was also the name of Pee-Wee Herman's dog in "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure".

Daisy - another cat named sight unseen. Chose it because it was cute and an easy name for her to learn.

Marshmallow - the name started out as sort of a joke. There was this tiny stray cat at DH's office and when DH would refer to him, I'd say "You mean Marshmallow?" I never thought DH would go for a name like that, but he did. He was actually named after the Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man in "GhostBusters." (Another one of my favorite movies.)

Sorry this was so long. You probably got a lot more information than you asked for.
But that's how my herd they got their names.

Coco- My sister named her.
She is black and white but her fur is reddish brown in the sun.
Meeko- I wanted something different and was thinking Niko.
Sasha-She is part Russian Blue and I wanted a Russian name.
Oreo Cookie Monster-My brother was calling her Oreo and Cookie so I put it together and added monster to it.
She is black and white.
Cleopatra Egyptian Queen-I wanted something Egyptian and just had the Cleopatra part Nial came of with the rest of her name.
Wrinkled Velvet aka Wrinkles-I named her Wrinkles because she is a sphynx.
Adilah helped pick her show name.
I had Velvet Wrinkles and she suggested Wriinkled Velvet so I had TCS vote on it.
Mystic Polar Bare-
I came up with his name but had TCS vote on the name.
I picked Polar because he is white and Bare because he is Naked.

Holland was named at the shelter. I thought it was so unique and it seemed to fit her, so I kept it. She's definitely a Holland! She's a little kitty, she weighed 4 pounds when I got her at 5 months. She's almost two years old now, and at her last vet visit she weighed in at 6 1/2 pounds. Her doctor said, "well, Holland IS a small country!"

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
Hercules- Cuz I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Disney movie Hercules plus I have to keep the name going so this current Hercules is actually Hercules II also known as "Your Cat" by BF

Fatman-He was originally Bubba when we adopted him but from the moment BF saw him he has been Fatman. He also answers to Tubbs, Big Kahuna and Crockett

Gidget-She is such a 'dumb blonde' that I automatically thought of those 60 movies with that beach bunny Gidget. She is only called by her full name when shes in trouble Gidget Marie (couldnt tell you where the Marie came from it just popped out one day) she mostly answers to GiGi, Daddys Girlfriend, G-Boo-Boo, and Jungle Butt because she thinks shes in the wild jungle and has no manners whatsoever!

Tank - she was named after Tank Girl, a comic book character that was made into a movie 1995 which I absolutely love lol She respondend to name immediately. Funny thing is I think she is the runt of her littler and is not Tank like at all lol

Penny - named after the character Penny from Big Bang Theory as my boyfriend and I both love that show ... then a few months after getting Penny, we discovered he was a boy but he already knew his name so we just left it as is lol

Sven - that was his name when we adopted him, and since he was 8 years old and very used to that name, we kept it.

Callie - she's a Calico. I know, not very original. We actually call her Coaster, which derived from Calicoaster. She answers more to Coaster now that to Callie.

Skunk, Aka Stinkpot, AKA Tinky - so named because he has a big bushy tail that is lighter underneath, and a big white spot on his tummy. Otherwise, he's black.

Darko - he's black, and we didn't want something normal. We were watching Saving Grace right after he adopted us and when she answered her phone "Hanadarko", DH said "Darko, we should name him Darko!", and we thought it was perfect. Now I call him Darko Polo most of the time. Or sometimes I call him Darko Tubbo because he's rather on the chubby side.

Are you secretly my best friend? I love TG - I've got all of the new comic books. :-D And Miss Moneypenny often gets shortened to just Penny. I love that TV show too, btw.

haha that's awesome. most people have no idea what I am talking about when I mention Tank Girl. My friends had surprised me after work with Tank and all were looking at me asking what I was going to name her. First thing to mind, I will name her Tank and she will be my little Tank Girl

Right now I only have Chester Cheetah Muffin. When I got him from the vet I worked at his name just popped in my head. It suits him well. His nicknames include Fluffy Love Button, Chester Cheetah Monkey, Loverboy and Fluffer-Nutter.

Cats I have had in the past were always based on their personality or some other physical trait they had. Like Sweety because she was, Stinky because he had gas issues
, Pee-Wee because he was the runt, Blossom because my son said she looked like a flower, George because he was a distinguished orange tabby and Minnie because she had a squeaky meow.

mine are all computer-related names - started w/the littermate sisters, Pixel & Mouse. i'd read the name Pixel in a book & liked it - Mouse was a blue cat, so her name fit well, too. then i acquired Cable [who i thought was male, originally, hence the name] who is a mackerel tabby. then Java, my calico, Chip, my black boy, & finally Firefox, aka 'Puter Bug.
my next one will most likely be Data.
