My cat greets people by eating

My cat Squiggles always hangs out in our kitchen and when no one's around she'll relax in her carrier box which is next to her food and water. What I find a little weird is that most of the time when someone enters the kitchen she'll get out of her box, meow, stretch and then go straight to her food and eat for the next few minutes. I thought maybe she did this because when someone's in the room she might feel safer and she has someone to watch her back while she eats but there have been times when someone's already in the kitchen and she'll do the same thing when someone else comes in. Is this weird or regular cat behavior?

Thanks,
J.

It's fairly normal. I pet sit for a living and I see a lot of animals who eat less when their owners are away just for that reason. They usually start eating when I get there for our visit. Dogs do it too. Then there are others who eat out of boredom and tend to gain weight while their owners are gone!

My kitty Stumpy would always greet us by scratching on her Alpine Scratcher. As soon as we walked in the door, she would run to the scratcher and have a good scratch. They're funny little critters

Holland goes to her scratching post too when I get home. It's one of her signs that she's ready for playtime! She doesn't eat a lot when I'm away, but she always wants to play FIRST when I get home, then eat.
