Question about l-lysine

Is it the NOW brand that most people recommend? The pure powder? I remember someone saying it is tasteless. I just tasted the Source Naturals powder I have used for years, and it has a very salty, slightly bitter taste.

I have always mixed Tolly's l-lysine solution with a suspension agent, and give it by mouth using a syringe.

After reading about so many people who use just the powder adding it to food I'd like to try that with Tolly, eliminating the suspension vehicle, it's just less junk to put in his system, you know?

But Tolly is the epitome of finicky, and will not touch food that has been messed with. So before I buy this powder, is it TRULY tasteless, and quickly soluble in wet food??

thanks or any help.

You just prompted me to taste my jug of NOW. It does have a slightly salty/bitter taste to it. Thanks for asking the question or I might not have tried it.

I add mine to one of my water bowls and that bowl seems to disappear faster than the others around my house. So it might change the taste of food, but it seems to blend well into water.

My boys have no problem eating the wet food with the NOW mixed into it and I also have some very finicky cats. If Archie even THINKS something is there.. he won't eat it and he eats EVERYTHING. I did put it into their water ... it does dissolve completely and they seemed to have no issue drinking that water.

I use both source naturals and Now both are pure ... lysine by nature is a tad salty.. Mine like it on the wet food

Thanks everyone. Since I have a bottle of the Source Naturals still I'll start with that, adding it to his supper tonight, maybe he'll like the salty taste. I can hope, anyway, LOL.

He's on an all canned diet and rarely drinks any water, so that wouldn't work for him. Because of his liver damage, I just want to cut as many "foreign" things out of his life as possible. Even though he doesn't get MUCH of the Ora-plus, (the suspension vehicle) if I could eliminate it all together it would make me happier.

Hey! Guess What?

HE ATE IT!! Tolly ate his food with the l-lysine added to it. I am STUNNED! I can't beleive I never tried this before. It's just that he's such a pciky eater, I was afraid to mess with his food at all, plus afraid he wouldn't get the full dose.

Wow! thanks everyone.

PS It's the Source Naturals l-lysine powder.

I was worried that my fussy furkids would notice the stuff in their water too, but not one of them is refusing to drink their water. In fact, they actually seem to be drinking MORE than usual.

Just please be careful that it does not list propylene glycol as an ingredient as that is the same thing added to anti-freeze. You find this ingredient in the most surprising places, especially if you have dogs as most dog treats contain this as well.

when i was still giving it, i put it into the water. but Pixel [my herpes kitty] now has a kibble w/lysine added, & has been doing well on it. i still add it to the wet i make, 'cause i figure it can't hurt, but Pixel won't eat wet [or baby food, either!] so it's mostly for the wet eaters. they all have the same kibble.
it doesn't fully dissolve in the water, but i've tasted it & it's ever so slightly salty - they don't seem to notice, tho.

Thank you, it is pure L-lysine powder, nothing else added to it. The suspension syrup I was using for the past 8 years also does not contain propylene glycol, but it does contain a lot of things that of course are unnecessary to Tolly's well being, and may or may not (no way to know) be filtered through his already over burdened liver.

So I am just thrilled to pieces at the way he went after that food with the l-lysine in it. He DEVOURED it! Tolly never devours food!

It must be the salty taste. he only gets it every other day now, for maintenance but this is just so wonderful, just one less thing I have to be forcing down his throat all the time. (he takes pills four times a day)
