Hello there!

This is my first post here, so let me start by saying hello! I am trying to find out information from other people who may have cats or kittens who suffer from eosinophilic granuloma complex. I have an approximately 1 year old male kitten who began showing signs of ECG at about 6 months. He began with a swollen lip, which was originally treated with an antibiotic as we thought it was an infection due to getting a scratch on the face from our other cat. He then began having difficulty swallowing, and our vet saw lesions going down his throat. After bloodwork, it was determined that he indeed suffered from eosinophilic granuloma complex. The first vet immediately put Sparkey on a round of steriod treatments, with him receiving a shot of Depromal (sp?) every two weeks. He was also switched to a limited ingredient diet as we thought this could be the culprit of his allergy trigger since he often had diarrea as well (Natural Balance LID Duck & Green Pea.). This alleviated the symptoms temporarily, but they ultimately came back.

We then visited a second vet, who referred us to a veterinary dermatologist. The dermatologist was not particularly helpful, and did not tell us anthing that we didn't already know about his condition. The gave us a trial of Royal Canin LID, and essentially told us that unless we can figure out what the trigger is, his condition would probably not get any better. This was about a month ago.

This leads us to today. Sparkey had gotten a scratch on his face from harassing one of our other cats, and now everything is hitting the fan. He is beginning to get bald spots on both corners of his mouth, has a larger bald spot under his chin, and it's only spreading. We were at the vet 2 days ago who prescribed us clavamox for his scratches, but the skin condition is getting worse.

My question is this - has anyone else had any experience with ECG? What did you do to manage it? Is there some way to test for the allergen in the blood work? Anyone who has any experience with this issue and may be able to offer some insight from their experiences would be great to hear from! Thanks so much for taking the time to read this post

Yes, there are blood tests for allergies. A large sample of blood is needed, and sent off to one of two labs; Either Heska or Spectrum laboratories for allergy testing. Both include food and enviromental allergy testing.

Steroids, such as Depo-Medrol are used to reduce the inflammation of the skin, and alleviate symptoms, but is not a cure. Cats (and dogs) can have no more than one Depo-Medrol injection a month, so if it's been a while since her shot, you may want to consult your veterinarian to see if this would be beneficial. Or perhaps oral steroids, like prenisolone?

Good luck with your kitty!

SparkeysMom, from experience, I can strongly recommend a grain-free canned diet. No grains and no dry food of any kind. Also, no plastic food or water dishes. (And since stainless steel can also cause allergic skin reactions, just as a precaution, it's best to stay away from stainless steel as well.)

There are many grain-free canned diets to choose from. Depending on how well Sparkey is doing on the new diet you might also consider getting help from a holistic vet and, if necessary, switching him to a raw diet. Sparkey is young enough for a safe and successful transition to such a diet.

I would also like to recommend this book for information
Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats
(available at amazon.com)

(The original version was called Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats, you might want to get that too.)

Ask your vet about Atopica (cyclosporine) I've heard some very good things about this medication and ECG.

It's not cheap and your kitty will need regular blood testing, but I know one kitty who has had great relief from being on it.

I also came to The Cat Site for help with my cat's granuloma complex. If you do a search, you will come up with a lot of great information and links to vet library sites with technical info. about granuloma.
I still have an on-going battle with my poor cat's EGC. The change in food helps with some of the outbreaks, but it has not stopped them. Some things that have helped:
Give your cat 500mg fish oil (for the fatty acids) every day during an outbreak and once a week for prevention. Just pierce the capsule and pour over cat's food. Vitamin E is helpful, too.
Avoid pine litter and pine cleaners.
Avoid plastic cat food dishes (though I still haven't given up my plastic watering dish).
Though I haven't seen this in print, stress seems to be a factor for my cat's outbreaks.

IF you find something that really seems to help your cat, PLEASE share it. I'm at my wit's end trying to keep his need for cortisone down and his granuloma under control. He has gotten a lot better, but I'd like to see him with even fewer outbreaks.
Good luck; I know how awful and frustrating granuloma can be.

P.S. I cut and pasted a reply that jcat sent me about EGC. This will get you started.
We have a lot of threads about EGC:

I've had a lot of luck using 500 mg. of salmon oil with Omega 3 (available at health food stores and pharmacies) every day during an outbreak (in addition to the cortisone shot) for up to six weeks, and then one per week for maintenance. Just pierce the capsule and squeeze it over the cat's food.

I asked this in your thread, but you didn't answer, have you tried the Atopica?

Otto, I have NOT tried it yet; I am still reading up on it. Right now, my cat's in a pretty decent place medication-wise. Making changes in his environment and adding the fish oil supplement have eliminated a need for meds. CURRENTLY. However, I know with EGC to expect the unexpected. I won't really feel excited until I'm seeing him down to having very occasional outbreaks. I like what I've read about Atopica; I know it does suppress the immune system, but my boy is an indoor cat anyway, so that would not present too much of a problem. If he starts really having a problem again, I hope to give the Atopica a try. Here is an article for anyone else wanting to know about Atopica.

Otto, thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention!
