I was on the phone with my daughter and I noticed Beeba was really "eying" something in the kitchen. Oh man, if it is a spider I will freak out. Well, no need to worry, it was a garter snake!!

We live on a rocky ravine and in the spring there are snakes around the house. Not millions, just here and there. No prob. Live and let live is my philosophy. They usually disappear in a week or two out into the fields or where ever they go.

I quick hung up and tried to pick him up because he was headed for the fridge and if he got under there, that would be it. Finally threw a throw rug over him. I guess that is why they are called "throw rugs." For snake catching!
I flung the whole thing outside.

I do know how it happened. I had an open bag of bird seed on the porch that we brought in last night because of raccoons. It must have been in the bag! He was only 2 feet from the bag when I saw him.

Good thing DH was at work. Snakes creep him out. Spiders creep me out. It works well. I wrangle snakes....he wrangles spiders!

Cool! I love garter snakes. How big was he? The babies are so cute but the big guys aren't bad looking either.

I'm like you, I'm not into spiders AT ALL, but snakes don't bother me. My grandfather on the other hand is terrified of snakes, which is kind of funny because he's this big, tough, tattooed man who fought in the Korean war, but a little snake will make him scream like a girl.

IMO more men are grossed out by snakes than women. DH is ok as long as they don't "surprise" him. It all goes back to his childhood seeing his grandmother kill a snake. (I had to go back and correct that. I wrote "kiss" instead of kill". Although his grandmother was a bid odd......

It was about 3/4 inch in diameter. A bigger one than I usually see. Yea, it's strange these big guys with "biker" looks being scared of snakes.

Hey they are all God's creatures. Pretty or not!!

I love those little garter snakes. We see quite a few of them in this area, and I've seen a few baby ones too. They were the cutest ever! Funny, but the dogs I walked were never interested in them.

There's no place like home
I found a snake between Scarlett and Koko in our kitchen shortly after we moved into this house. It was a garter snake and harmless, but the girls were on either side of it and it kept trying to snap at each of them.

I highly respect snakes, but they still give me the willies. I used long BBQ tongs to remove it from the house (unharmed). DH wasn't home and just laughed at me when I told him later that day. He moved a rattler from the neighbors yard one time and has no fear (just respect).

Big kudos for your relocation!

Aww, I think garter snakes are so cute.

We used to get them in our basement occassionally as well since our house backed to open space that was quite conducive to them.

My father's only phobia is snakes. One time when my sister was around 12-13 (and I was 9-10 - we both loved snakes), we heard Dad yelling for my sister to get downstairs (where he was working) NOW! There was a little baby garter snake that he had managed to scoop up on a shovel which he was holding out at arm's length so the snake was as far from his as possible. He wanted my sister (or me, or anyone!) to take it out to the garden. You know, just in case it moved or something.

The typical Marine - tough as nails - scared of a baby snake that he knew (rationally) wouldn't hurt him. He wouldn't kill one, though, not unless it could and would hurt him or his family first. He knew this baby snake would be beneficial...just IN THE GARDEN and not in his house! Of course we took the snake to the garden and let it go, and we still give him heck for that to this day even though it's been almost 30 years.

I have phobia, too...... So far (even when it was cold) in the last 5 months I have seen 5 snakes outside of my home. Two were right by my front door.

I also live on a mountaintop where they are known to be. I should have thought about that before we moved here. I had all the doors sealed when I found the 2 by the front door. I dont know what I would do if I found one in my home. I know the first thing I would do is probably faint from sheer terror.

We used to have garter snakes all over the yard when I was a kid growing up. You'd be walking and a snake would suddenly slither in front of you. I've never been afraid of them, but not into picking them up either

One night a few years ago, DH and I came home from somewhere to find a big snake in the driveway. Beautiful snake. DH says, is that a copperhead? So he went next door and got our neighbor and sure enough, copperhead. We have them all over the neighborhood, I guess, but that's the first one I've ever seen.

DH is creeped out by snakes, but I'm not. Yeah, it must be a guy thing. We were at a museum once and they had one of those big ones, boa constrictor or some such? Anyway, I was over them "petting" him and DH was far far away calling for me to get away from the snake! It was funny.
