Hi Guys,

Got a question....My partner is a guitarist and lately we have noticed everytime he starts playing guitar our little man Dexter becomes very vocal. He continues for the whole time he is playing and walks around him.
Even just now, Dexter is fast asleep and as soon as the guitar started he meowed, hes still asleep but had to have his say....

Wondering if anyone else has noticed this type of reaction to musical instruments with their cats?

Mine don't react so much to guitars (DH has a couple of those), but they are fascinated when I play the piano. I also have an accordion that I pull out once every few years that I have to play in a closed door room. I have one cat that attacks me when I play it, some of them meowl and a few of them scream. Thus the reason it only comes out every few years.

We did have a dog once that would break into a huge doggie smile every time the guitar came out and would lay at DH's feet when he played. Her favorite song was Brown Eyed Girl.

I've experienced this when I played the piano with one of my cats. I guess it just was when I played the piano and sang. She'd jump on the bench, stand against me balancing herself by placing a front paw against my shoulder meow and stick the other paw over my mouth
I guess she wasn't my biggest fan

Is it an electric guitar that is maybe too loud for Dexter since cats have sensitive hearing?

When we had an organ, our cat Sheba would relax behind the music rack when I played. The most reaction I would get would be to the hymn "The Church's One Foundation". She would hang her head over the rack and look at me.

My mother did not have the best voice and gave up trying to sing lullabyes to sis and me because we would place our hands over her mouth. Even had a couple of cats do it to her, too.

they clearly have good taste in musical instruments!

My cats don't react much when DH plays his piano, or when they walk across the keys.

Mine don't care one way or another about the guitar, but either the organ or the keyboard brings out the "We gotta help" response which is two cats walking across the keys and me saying 'Geddown cats!!'. They don't listen but carry on the parade

My cousin and I, between us, have played piano/keyboard, recorder, tin whistle, violin, and flute; our cats have had the strongest reactions to the wind instruments, but anything synthesized seems to just not do it for them.

I compose music for a living and my cats stay in my studio with me for the most part of the day. If they don't like what I'm writing they leave. If they leave the room I will generally re-think what I'm doing and make some changes. They never howl or make any noises while I work.

It the cats are happy, relaxed, sleepy and loving the music my customers usually do too! I consider them an important asset to my company.
Hmmm...is it possible that their vet care and food could be a tax write off? Perhaps as "consultants"

To Captiva, no it is only acoustic.

And now my partner has got much more interested in this post since Audio cat added to it, from him....

Dexter also comes in the studio with me when I am composing or producing. He jst lounges around and chills out whilc still having a chat every now and then.... but I havent tested the theory that if something sounds bad he will leave, i will now keep that in mind. =)
Its funny before I moved out of home I had a dog named Jessie, a jack russell (shes still around, jst not living with us) who always had to be around when I made music. I called her musicdog and now I have a music cat.
Its not even just guitar, also glockenspiel and eggshakers...he steals those....lol
Ill post a photo of him being musical in a sec, from when he was a kitten.

Btw Audiocat, what type of music do you do? I am a Music Production University student. Always looking for new contacts... =)

I compose music for games, multi-media, TV & Film. I also do a lot of audio editing, mixing, etc.

Sometimes I sneak and put audio of my cats into music scores and projects. Little Forrest has been heard around the world....quite a few times I've used his strange "barking"/"chuffing" noise he makes when he is being overly aggressive as a percussion instrument. It makes a day at work more fun.

Yes..I do have a website: http://www.sonicfarms.com

Cats can definitely make some useful noises. However, Forrest makes a lot of un-useful noises (howling, complaining, being demanding and petulant) that I would not inflict upon anyone.
Lilly never makes any noise except this little squeak when she opens her mouth to make a "silent" meow or is snoring. Zach is a talker and always saying something.

I unfortunately cannot play any instruments. I only sing. Sho reacts very negatively to my father singing. He'll hide and not come out until the noise is gone. However, he'll hole himself up in my room whenever I sing and fall right asleep regardless of whether I'm singing soft classical or upbeat pop songs. I usually play the music quite loud too. Doesn't seem to bother him the least bit.
