Need some advice

Last night is still a blur but I will try and explain this as best as I can...

Lets go back to about 3 weeks ago when I got a 5 week old kitten, the mother of the kittens was dying after birth and was getting worse everytime the kittens fed off of her, so with a Vets suggestion, the owners decided they had to let them leave a week or so early. I brought Bella home and she was great, I love her to pieces... I have an adult cat named Mittens, she is 8 yrs old. She's part Siamese so she is very territorial. She hissed and growled at Bella for 5 days, finally she started to clean her... All she wants to do is lick her, Bella just wants to play but she's biting and scratching Mittens pretty bad... Last night, I let Bella (the kitten) out of the bedroom so she could run around, she was in the kitchen and it was dark... Mittens was chasing after her as if she was playing. Bella went behind the kitchen chair and was moving around a plastic bag we had a box in, Mittens attacked and Bella was crying and making horrible noises, so my mother got up to see what was going on. Mittens ran into the living room and ran right up my sisters friend... attacking her, biting and scratching... she was able to get her off, and Mittens ran back into the kitchen and attacked my mother, not once but 3 times... My father and myself were in shock, I felt like I couldnt move fast enough. I got in the kitchen and my mom got Mittens off of her, and all I could do was keep putting my foot in her way of attacking my mom again, my mom left the kitchen to get in a closed room, and Mittens ran after her leg and launched on so tight she has teeth marks and scratched all over my moms foot and ankle... It was a bloody mess...

We all got in the bedroom, and Mittens sat on the floor with black eyes just staring at us, it was evil and it was not her normal self... she's never ever attacked us... 15 mins later, My father and I went into the living room, and she was being lovable, rubbing on us, letting us pet her... she even jumped up on me and laid on my chest purring. I was scared to death... we are all so afraid of her snapping like that again...

I don't know if the kitten playing, startled her and sent her into attack mode, or if she doesn't want the kitten here...

I will be absolutely heart broken if I have to give the kitten away... but the more I think about it, the more I may have to...

any advice, or questions you have for me would be greatly appreciated..

Thank you
~Laurie

For some reason, the sound of a plastic bag crumpling can cause some cats to panic. I don't know why but there's been more trouble in my house from plastic bags then anything else. I would keep the plastic bags away and see how things go. If it happens again (or something similar) it may be that Mittens isn't up for a kitten friend.

This is called displaced aggression. Mittens was frightened by one thing, and everything around her became a threat.

I recommend two things.

First, bring Mittens in for a check up. This is to make sure she's not getting sick. At 8 years old she is due for a senior blood profile anyway. Include thyroid.

Sometime a change in health can make a cat behave in an unusual way. Also, stress (such as a new kitten) can cause illness. Be sure to tell the vet what happened.

Secondly, get some Feliway plug in diffusers, and start from the beginning with the introductions.

Keep them completely separate until you have had the feliway going for at least a week. They can sniff under a door, and you can exchange smells by rubbing a towel on one and then the other. We can help you the the next part when the time comes.

By the way. If she has another episode like this, the best thing to do is to get her into a dark room alone and shut the door. If you can't grab her, gently put a blanket over her. She should feel feel safer enclosed like that anyway, and then pick her up (in the blanket) and put her in the room and close the door. Just put her down, blanket and all, making sure the blanket is loose enough for her to get out from under it, when she's ready.

For the family members who have been bitten and scratched, they should see a doctor. Bites and deep cat scratches are very dangerous. You may need tetanus shots and/or antibiotics.

Some state laws require reporting cat bites. I trust Mittens is up to date on her rabies vaccine?

And one more question. What are you feeding? Has her diet changed recently?
