I have a garden and my cats do get to explore it, but only on a harness and leash. They go outside but they're either on leash or in an enclosure/stroller/carrier.

I've had 2 cats from The Cats Protection league over here and I got asked if we had a garden, its like with anything what is the norm in one country is totally different in another. My cats are too lazy to go out If I am in the garden 2 of them may follow me out but when I come back in they do too, they love having a litter tray, it saves them unneccessary walking I think wherever you go it is unsafe for cats to be outside, I am not saying that I agree or disagree with keeping them in, I think its a personal preference and nobody should be hung, drawn and quartered for it. Everyone on here is a cat lover and we all want the best for our cats, all people bring children up differently, doesn't mean if someone does something different to someone else they are a bad mum. Our main problem in this country at the minute is dangerous dogs, especially attacking children. x

I got Jack from The Cats Protection and they were TOLD that he was going to be indoor only. I'm a member of our local branch, but theres another branch not far from me who's meetings i used to go to, and one woman in particular didn't like them being inside.

Actually i reported her to head office because she had a nasty attitude towards my feelings on it

Both flash and sooty are scared of outside they see the door open they run the other way, i watched when i lived in my flat, about a dozen cats and kittens run about in the street, the big cats picked on the little cats, adults pushing and kicking the cats out the way (some of these cats were very friendly) my neighbours thought i was cruel by keeping my two inside not letting them have freedom, i said to them theres no point having a pet if your going to rely on 1. other people to feed and love it 2. not seeing it for days on end - that is no disrespect to anyone on here that has out door cats before anyone sees fit to have a go about it.... im simply putting it across that the UK is no safer than any where else to have outdoor cats and this thread keeps going away from that and is a debate on outdoor/indoor cats the pros and the cons on the matter

All of my parents cats were outside, and only one of them lived an old'ish age because the rest had all been hit by cars

Someone at work said i was cruel when i decided to keep Rosie in as a kitten, but my vet basically told me to ignore them and told me the pros and cons of outside cats, and the cons outweighed the pros

What i do remember is, as a child i used to worry myself sick if the family cat wasn't in at night, because in the summer they just wanted to stay out

^Much the same experience with the family kitties I had. My mother and I even witnessed one of my dad's so called friends swerve into the grass along the side of the street to hit one of our cats. I was maybe 5 at the time and went with my mother to clean up poor Cuddles body. It's just not safe.
