Hello - my name is Linni and I'm so pleased to have found this forum. After 15 years of not having a cat - my husband and I adopted Captain from the SPCA. He's one and a half year old pure black shorthair, and very, very lovable. He has captured our hearts. He is not happy unless he is right beside us.

My husband is retired and I work from home, so we're around all day for him.

Part of the reason that we didn't own a cat for so long was that we're sailors and basically move aboard our 34' sailboat each summer. (It's essentially our summer cottage.) But after having met many sailors with cats aboard, we decided that 'Captain' (Cappy for short) will come along with us this year.

Is there anyone else on this forum who takes a cat aboard a boat? I'd love to compare notes.

Linni

Hi Linni,
welcome to TheCatSite.

I have a black kitty that I adopted from a shelter...
for some reason, our black kitties have the sweetest personalities.
Cappy sounds adorable. I hope that you are able to share photos with us.

I don't know of any members who have boats but...
you might want to start a thread, with your question about boats and cats, in our Lounge, where more members might see it.
Who knows, one of them might have a friend with a boat kitty.

If I can help you with questions about our site, just send a private message to my user name. I will get back to you asap.

Please make yourself at home.

There was a thread about a year ago about someone who had their cats aboard and one of them had escaped. They finally found him after the season ended (this was way up north). The main thing I took from their posts (other than that they really loved their cats) was that the cats should have a harness and a leash. Both their cats had gone overboard, but they had managed to catch the first one.

Thank you all for your wonderful welcomes!

I'm going to take the suggestion, and post this 'boating with a cat; on the 'lounge' section of the forum. We are in the process of harness training our lovely Cappy, and he's doing really well. We live in a rather urban area, and I don't want him running loose anyway. He's so docile, he doesn't mind us putting a harness on him at all. Of course, we would never leave him unattended, because he can get out of this harness quicker than I can blink an eye! We are ordering a 'walking jacket' for him.

I was doing some searching on various cruising sites, and one of the cutest stories is about a couple who left their cat in a life jacket and tethered to the boat. When they got back in their dingy with groceries, there was their cat, sitting nice as you please, but he'd managed to wiggle out of his life jacket, and they never did find it.

I'm glad I found this nice place for cat lovers.

There was an episode of "Housecat Housecall" where a married couple let their cat roam free on the docks of Marina Del Ray (California). All 3 lived on a houseboat. The expert convinced them to walk the cat on a harness instead of roaming free. That cat was so cute. The episode was called "Houseboat Kitty" Welcome to TheCatSite!
