I've never seen a cat do this.....

My friend just adopted a cat from the Humane Society here in Florida. The cat was neutered and up-to-date with all shots. The first three days home...he adjusted quite well...very friendly with friends and family, etc. (didn't hide under the bed) ANYWAY....

Today I went to visit and the cat was hiding in a corner, salivating heavily....like a faucet...not stop salivating. He's eating, using the litter box (poo & pee) but STILL...."Pouring saliva from the mouth" - In my 43 years of owning cats, I have never seen a cat do this.

We called Animal ER and they said he might have allergies....to catnip of all things...Have you guys ever heard of such a thing. Could it be something else? I am worried for this cat...never seen a boy look so miserable.

Any advice is appreciated!

I'd honestly take him to the Vet. It might be an allergy but it could be something else like a problem in his mouth or with his teeth, dental issues...

Yep, to the vet if you cannot see something in his mouth you cannot resolve yourself - things like a wad of hair or food stuck to a tooth.

That sounds like a cat that got into something - poisonous (household/plant) or ate something that tasted really bad or bit/stung them back (stinkbug, spider/scorpion/assassin bug).

It looks like a case for an ER visit. that they can figure out what is going on and help him.

The only time I seen something like this was when I was around 9 and one of my childhood cats tried to kill a toad. I saw it happen but wasn't quick enough to stop the cat, even with immediately washing his mouth out he still needed a vet visit.


Oh, and I don't know if I've seen many of your posts before? Or at least I know I haven't seen that sig before - it's cute!

I agree, this is all the signs of possible poisoning and needs immediate vet care. I hope the kitty is ok........In our thoughts, please let us know

Go to the vet.
Sadly my Stormy did that and it turned out she had arf.
Her kidneys were gone and she was only 5.
You need to go to the vet now.

I have seen cats drool from allergies but it is occasional with no lethargy/hiding I would go to the vet, it sounds more like poisoning to me too

Jake ate a firefly one time and did the same thing for about 15 minutes..It scared me but after 15 minutes he was back to normal...
I hope your kitty is okay.

Our Max did this. He had acute renal failure and we lost him. Please take your cat to the vet. He needs to be checked by a doctor.

I'll be interested to see what the problem is. One thing that occurred to me was something stuck in his mouth, but they usually won't eat if that happens.

It would sure be nice if they could talk and tell us what's wrong...and what they were doing when it happened.

Well....we took poor JC to the vet and doc agreed that this cat was poisoned. What we think he was poisoned with was 409 cleaner (that was used to mop the floor earlier AND he walked on it before it dried) that was the ONLY thing we did different that day. Today he SO much better...no more drooling (still hiding a wee bit) BUT very sweet with visitors, etc. What a tough sweet boy

NO MORE 409!!!
DARNIT ALL! Wet Mop & a Broom!!

Others have had problems with cleaners, and iirc 409 is a pretty strong one - or at least very effective for cleaning.

I hope he'll be ok. Will he have to go back for another check up to make sure there was no lasting damage?

In the future, if a cat can reach the surface - rinse it. A lot of cleaners leave residues even when dry and it's just not worth the risk.. plus they make surfaces like floors look dull.
