Reggie just turned 15 in February and has been dealing with kidney disease (failure) for over a year now. Besides weight loss he's really been fine and recently has gained some weight back. However the past few months he's starting doing something new.

While he's sleeping, because his bladder is so full he will 'leak' urine out. It can be just a few drops or if he sleeps in one spot for a while it can be quite a bit. As this has been happening we've been keeping up with washing anything that he leaks on, blankets on chairs or whatever. But the one thing that's getting bad is on our bed during the night.

He's always slept with us at night and usually will sleep in one spot for most of the night. Recently now he's been leaking so much it's really causing problems - soaking the comforter so we put on different top sheets, now he's leaked through those. It's getting to be a very difficult thing to continually wash and keep clean the bed stuff.

Has anyone dealt with this? The easiest solution is shutting the doors at night but he's going on 15 years of sleeping on the bed and I feel pretty awful shutting him out now in his final years. Has anyone used any kind of different sheet protectors or anything? Before we shut the doors I just want to explore my options.

I am so sorry this is happening to you and your wonderful pet. I never had to deal with it. I just wanted to encourage you though because I know it must be hard. I don't think I would shut the door. I have heard of people putting a diaper like thing on dogs when they come in heat. Just a thought. I would probably get a protector mat like you would use in a baby's crib and put it under a favorite spread or blanket of the cats. Then you would only have to wash that one item. You could use something like a large towel or baby blanket, then put the protector under that. I hope you figure it out so your baby can still sleep with you.

Sorry this is happening to you.
I never had that happen with a CRF cat.
Can the vet do a ultrasound of his bladder to see if there is a reason this is happening?
My CRF gets bladder infections unless she stays on Baytril.

I'm not sure how much this will help but I just bought a brand new mattress and I bought a mattress protector to go over it. It's terry cloth on top but it has like a vinyl underside so NO Liquid will go through. It's completely waterproof. I am glad because I spill his fluids on it sometimes and don't want to ruin my new mattress. I would recommend that, but of course not putting him out. My cat would have a nervous breakdown if any of our doors were ever shut, he hates it. Maybe try folding up a thick towel and see if he will lay on it in his favorite spot. I know after Boo came home from Crashing with his CRF, he would sleep for so long and was so weak that by the time he got to the pan he would have a full bladder, poor guy.
The mattress protector fits over the entire mattress. It was expensive (to me) at about 80 bucks but well worth it in my opinion.
I would get him to a vet too and find out why that is happening. Good luck with your baby

I don't believe that CRF and peeing like this go hand in hand. Might be a good idea to get a sample of kitty's urine and have a urinaysis done on it. Cats w/ CRF are more at risk for urinary tract infections (UTI) due to the fact that their urine is so much more dilute (and less acidic). 2 of my old CRF kitties, one older than yours, still used the litterbox right up to the very end, so did my other.

Does kitty make it to the litterbox during the day when awake?

unfortunately u gonna have to maybe stop letting him sleep with you because of of the endless amount very thick bed covered needed for that!!! & daily washing ,

u need to ;

A) buy him 2 or more little cat beds !!

B) wrap this cat beds in very big plastic bags

C) finally lay one of many clean big peace of cloth  or old worn out shirts or clothes on top that bed !!

and you gonna need to dedicate at least 7 or more old unwanted piece of cotton clothing for that !! , that is what i do with my kidney failure /diabetic cat !!)

it will make you washing & replacing his bed covers far more easier !!!)

& sadly u gonna have to close your bedroom door when u go out to prevent him access
