Biscotte has had a fever and signs of urinary infection, peeing dark yellow urine indiscriminatingly and avoiding the box. I took her to the vet two days ago and of course he could find no fever (it had been 39.9 the night before). So he gave her an antibiotic injection (2-3 days duration) and told me to administer a diuretic pill daily. I was very dubious about this, but gave her one yesterday morning. This morning she had a fever of 39.3, and is not eating or drinking, just wants to lie on my bed. I am taking her back later today (my car is in the garage and I have to wait for a friend to take me or I would have been there already).

But before I go, has anyone else had such a treatment for UTI? It seems very odd to me. I have been giving her water by syringe to ensure she is not dehydrated, but not force feeding her for the moment. I have put her in a cage to monitor her and so far she has not peed or pooed this morning.

It doesn't sound from your post that this Vet collected a urine sample and did a urinalysis?

I've never heard of giving a diuretic to either a cat or human with a UTI. It makes no sense at all and if anything, it would cause a lot more discomfort because the inflamed bladder/urinary tract (caused by the bacteria that's causing the infection) would be further irritated by the need to keep peeing (side effect of diuretic).

I don't know how they do things there in France but giving a cat with a suspected UTI a one-time antibiotic shot is ludicrous. If a cat has a UTI, it needs a full course of antibiotics - generally 7-10 days.

What is the name of this "diuretic" that was given to your cat?

The Vet should have been more concerned with testing your cat's urine than checking for a fever, IMO. Let us know how it goes.

That is odd, and I agree he should have checked her urine. I know she's your tiny cat, my worry with one that small is that she could go downhill quick. Since you've been giving her water and she had no pee (at the time of your post) she should have been at the vet.

I hope you can get her in ASAP.
