Sudden inapproprate pooping- older cat.

Hi all!

I read a bunch of the forum posts already but my problem seems a little stranger.

I have a 7 year old male tabby that has NEVER pooped outside the little box. Recently there have been big changes in his life.

-we moved into a new apartment from my parents house.
-he is now a single cat, seems ok with it so far but i would like to eventually get him a companion cat.

So heres the story:

I'm a clean freak. I bought him a new litter box with cover...and began using scoop able litter, which i scoop daily. I placed his box in the bathroom with mats under it. He used it for a month, no problems. Good boy.

About two weeks ago I had friends stay over and setup an air mattress for them. They left and i never got to taking it down. Three days ago Mr. Kitty poops on the air mattress. I figured it was my fault as i had thrown papers onto it the previous day. So i cleaned everything up and sprayed cat hormones around the room to ensure it wasnt associated with pooping.

The next day he poops in corner of same room. This time i assume its time for detective work. I had recently bought him a cat water fountain for drinking, which he is scared of. I had it in the same bathroom as his litter box. So i removed it thinking it was scaring him from using the litter box.
He comes in after i removed water fountain, and urinates in litter box. I thought problem was solved.

Turns out he is peeing in box, but pooping outside of it, he pooped again today in a different corner of room. Once again I cleaned up and sprayed.

Any suggestions??

-7 yr. old male tabby, neutered. Never pooped outside of box before. Recently relocated and single.

Hi there!

A few suggestions for you to try, that I think it will help you a whole lot:

1- remove the cover from the litterbox... Not a lot of cats like it, and I noticed you said this is a new thing for him?

2- Add a NEW litter box - a lot of cats like peeing in one box and pooping in the other. As a rule of thumb, the number of boxes should be the number of cats, plus one.

3- use Cat Attract Litter - you can buy it at most pet stores, at Petco, PetSmart, Pet Supplies Plus, etc... It does an AMAZING job attracting your cat to the box. Here is a rebate form, so that your first bag is free.

4- Make sure to always clean the spots with a good enzyme cleaner...

5- Since this is a new place, I would plug in a Feliway in the room, to reduce the stress... It does help a whole bunch too!

Try these, and see it... I bet it will work!

Carolina's suggest are great. The only thing I'd add at this point is if it happens again - grab the feces up in a plastic baggie and drop it off at the vet to help rule out physical causes.
