Sorry to start a new thread, but I wanted to make sure this got read.

Audrey had a dental and a skin biopsy today. She was sent home with a liquid pain med to be taken orally to help with the biopsy discomfort. She is horrible about taking any medication, so my husband and I got a firm hold on her before trying.

Something freaked her out. The second my husband pressed the plunger on the meds she jerked in our hands, nailed me with one of her teeth (total accident and didn't break skin) and took off down the hall. Now she's wandering around the bedroom making a weird smacking motion with her mouth and sort of spitting out mucous and saliva. We're worried she may have aspirated a bit, though she isn't coughing at all.

She was absolutely terrified of us for a few minutes (I have never seen this) and even now she doesn't like us near her.

What could be going on? This is so horribly out of character for her and even though she seems fine aside from the drooling and spitting it's freaking us out. The amount of spit has decreased, but she's still doing it.

She's also still stoned on whatever drugs the vet gave her, which could be part of why she's so touchy, but that wouldn't explain the spitting and smacking.

ETA: Here is the original thread about why she had the biopsy done. http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=213730

I would suggest calling the vet. your local er vet at this time is likely an option ... in my non vet thinking sounds like anesthesia wearing off

Thank you for responding so quickly! Fortunately, she's basically stopped now.

I just did a google search for "cat foaming at mouth after medication" (should have done this first, sorry), and apparently it's a really common issue. A lot of pet medications are mixed with flavors used for pediatric medications, so they're really sweet and cloying, which cats hate. The foaming and spitting is a reaction to the flavor. I tried sniffing her meds and they absolutely reek of faux-fruit syrup. Yuck.

I think the terror was a combination of being totally stoned on whatever the vet gave her and the shock of her human friends forcing something absolutely horrible into her mouth.

Sorry for the alarm! It was just so awful to see and I overreacted. Just the foaming would have been okay, but combined with the panic it was too much for me to deal with at this hour. I think we might need to ask the vet for a different base for the pain meds.

This may or may not be even related, but when I got Boo home from his original one day stay for IV's after he "crashed' and got diagnosed with CRF, he was so stressed that he was drooling heavily and smacking his lips. But after we let him be, left him alone for a good hour he had completely stopped it. It could be meds wearing off and stress, and Boo has never done the drooling thing, that was the first time ever. Don't be sorry for being worried, it freaked me out too and I called the vet. They told me if he hadn't stopped within about 30 minutes that I may want to bring him back, but he had stopped by then. I think mine was a stress reaction mixed with IV fluids and dehydration. Sounds like yours very well could've been the meds. Hope your baby feels better soon!
