My neighbors cat was diagnosed Felv positive about 3 weeks ago. He went from 12lbs to 6 within these 3 weeks. He had been eating and drinking, but yesterday started falling over sideways. The family took him to the vets today to be pts. My husband was just over there and said that they told him that the cat was yowling and screaming and fighting, he did not want to go when the vet was going to give the shot. This made me so sad to hear that. I cannot put myself in their shoes and know if the cat was suffering, but in my shoes I would of brought the cat back home because I think that they know, and he was not ready yet. I really hope to never have to be put in that position. I am sure that the neighbor lady is greiving hard, as she was the one in there with the cat while the husband and son sat in the wating area. I really liked the cat {Smokey}. The neighbor lady would clap her hands and call his name when it was time to go in for the evening, and he would comply and obey her every time. About 6 months ago he got in a real bad fight w/ a strange cat that came to his back yard, and we think that is how he got Felv, and we have not seen the other cat since. I am glad my cat did not encounter that fight. Linda

Poor Smokey. Too bad he wasn't an inside only cat. This would not have had to happen. If only people would learn to keep their kitties safe indoors. There are too many threats to their health out there. Cars, Dogs, disease, other cats, wildlife, and very sick people. Why risk your baby to that when it is safe inside?

The thing about Smokey was that he was an abandoned cat and hanging around, and that was about 5 years ago, and they gave him a home. We live at the farthest back part of a huge mobile home park and there are no loose dogs, no traffic. All he did was stay in his back yard, sadly a infected cat came along. He spent the evenings inside the house and was out in the afternoon. Linda

My hubby also told me that the neighbors hubby said that also a deciding factor was that they were going to go on a vacation and knew Smokeys days were numbered! My hubby said when he saw Smokey eating and drinking this morning he looked just fine, but I guess they lived with him and he must of been suffering because I know they all adored this cat, must of been a tough decision.

I don't think vacation plans should have been a deciding factor at all.

This is just my opinion, but vets don't take putting animals down lightly because they were trained to provide treatment. Since Smokey has already been pts, the vet must have really felt it was the best thing to do for him.
