He's a gorgeous fluffy orange-and-white splotchy longhaired cat. Not so gorgeous right now because his humans make him stay out all night including in rain, and they don't brush him. But he'd clean up nice.

They haven't gotten him fixed so he gets in fights, so he's starting to get a little scruffy-looking and a little dirty from rolling around in the mud. I think it's still nothing a brush and some time wouldn't fix.

When they get home, they put him out right away. He meows at their door and they don't answer. They wouldn't miss him.

BUT...I'm already two cats over the two cat limit for this apartment, and two of mine are going in to the vet as soon as I get my tax return and can't be around a pre-harblectomy boy cat at all until then. Already have enough cats, or more than enough by the management's standards, definitely cannot have exponential cats.

I still want to cuddle him and brush him and give him treats and food that's made mostly out of things cats would eat fresh...and keep him out of the rain and out of fights...I'm sorry, beautiful orange-and-white fluffy cat. I can't save you.

One more reason I dislike people more and more.....

I know how you feel. Maybe buy him a few treats just for him. At least he will know someone cares about him.

Sure you can.

Take him in. Get him fixed. Then find him a nice forever home with a family across town that will keep him inside.

If they ask you if you have seen their cat, simply say, "Sorry! No I haven't."

I've animal napped, and I'd do it again in a heart beat. One time I went so far as to go into someone's yard, unchain their dog and take it to the Humane Society because the people left it out 24/7 without shelter from the cold or snow, and frozen water....in the -40's!!!

Id do the same thing. As a matter of fact most of you know about outside cat and when we move Im planning on convincing BF to let me take him too and get him fixed and convert him to an inside cat along with all my babies. Its gonna take some work but I know that Bf is just as attached to him as I am. So yeah steal the cat get him fixed and either keep him for yourself or find him a furever home! No animal deserves to be treated like that.

I agree with you 110%! Why do people BOTHER adopting if they have no intention of really caring for the animal?!?
Poor thing...

I'd catnap him and clean him up. I wonder though if just having a nice chat with the owners could change their habits though? Some people really are dumb and don't know any better. Well, hopefully they truly are and not faking it.

I'm all for the catnapping idea. My brother's co-worker "catnapped" her neighbors two neglected dogs when she moved away. Technically, cats are free agents and you don't own a cat. Or so I heard on The People's Court. (Of course, my cats are my cats, but that doesn't apply with your neighbor's cat. Yeah, he's a free agent.)

Years ago one of my friends catnapped a neighbour's cat that was completely neglected. She'd started feeding her as the poor thing was so skinny. Then she moved & took the cat with her. She is a pampered much loved cat now.

I agree with the catnapping suggestion. If you can't afford it, is there a humane society or no-kill shelter around you that you can take him to?

I would help him, too. That poor kitty.

You need to get this outside kitty fixed, too. He is very susceptible to get diseases and spreading them. And he will mate, too.
If you cannot, you can go to petfinder.org and find the rescue groups in your area, to borrow a humane trap and find a low cost spay and neuter certificate in your area. His life depends on it.

Yup....I'm guessing that I don't have to point out the difference between CAT/DOG/KID napping. Please don't make me!! *sigh*

Well, I left food out for him yesterday, in front of my apartment...he's very skitty of me; I don't think he's had much human interaction since he was a kitten. BF's theory is that they got him as a kitten, not considering that he would turn into a cat; I have no problem believing this. Stupid humans. Anyway, I could see him while I was leaving the food out, and he didn't react at all to the sound of the can, so I don't think he's had canned food before, but he must have checked it out after I left since the food got eaten. We'll work on it.

I can't keep him, because they're right across from me and might notice and make trouble, but if I can line up a home, I could hide him in my closet (the only non-windowed room in the apartment other than the bathroom which would be opened and closed too much so he would sneak out; it's a roomy walk-in, so it wouldn't be horrible for him) for a few days to get him vetted and snipped and work out travel plans. If he disappears without a trace they'll assume he was "just" run over.

If I can't find a different home for him, I guess I can still make friends with him so at least he'll have someone to love...and maybe yoink him anyway when I or they move.

I won't put him into the shelter; that's a death sentence with a one-month countdown, here. There doesn't seem to be a no-kill one around; I'm in a rural area so people are pretty nonchalant about cats. I'd rather play with him outdoors for years than give him a month to live.

I would at least clean him up and get him fixed. I doubt they would even notice. At least then he would be safer from fights, etc. while you look for a home for him.

I will if I can pull it off. I'd have to be able to get away with keeping him in for long enough to recover from the post-anesthesia loopiness; wouldn't want him to try to cross a street like that. Although I suppose the closet would work for that too.

This is why I like my animals more than most people I know.  You can save the cat.  Take him in, neuter him and find him a good home.  Or, after you've cleaned him up, give him to a rescue group that will adopt him out to a good home.  I get so sick and tired of the ignorance of some people.

I have a semi feral (if there is even such a thing) living in my garage that was just abandoned when her owners moved.  The garage is heated, she gets her 3 squares a day and owns a corner where her bed and house are.  I tried to bring her in a couple of times but she was extremely unhappy so I decided to give her part of the garage.  It's been 6 years now and she is just now coming around and rubbing on me a little. I'm going to try to bring her in again if she gets friendlier but she is pretty safe with the garage. She even has a cat door so she can come and go.  But at night, I lock her door and she has to stay  in the garage.  She comes in usually around 10pm and then she is locked in.  I feel this is the best I can do for her right now.

I know you don't have this option but there are things you might be able to do. I've napped animals before and been able to place them in good homes.

Best of luck to you and that kitty.  Your heart is in the right place here and you are a good person for wanting to help.

LOL nurseangel... I wouldn't nap a kid anyway.  Don't care for them much around here as it is. But dogs and cats are a whole 'nother story

So do it!!!!
It sounds like this boy is being dreadfully neglected. They seem to want to be able to say "we have a cat", but they don't do anything for the poor thing.

Can you find a family member or friend that would be willing to take him on a temporary basis?  You could get him vet checked, neutered and find him a new loving home.

If the neighbours ask you if  you have seen their cat. Simply say "No. Sorry I haven't." I doubt they would even put of posters to find him.

This is a thread that is almost two years old, and has been reopened by what appears to be a troll. (zokondragon) So I'll ask a mod to close it now. Although I do agree with the sentiments of the posters above about catnapping! :wavey:
