whats it mean when a cat runs up to a window and growls like a dog? and there is nothing outside? its daylight?

That the cat is being a cat. It is not a dog behavior, cats are territorial of their homes, too.

Cats have amazing hearing, likely your cat heard something outside. I have one that doesn't like strangers getting too close to the house - he'll growl at the windows.

Mine growls like a dog when he has his feather toy in his mouth and there are other cats in the room. It's cute, but also a little nuts.

Yes, there's something out there somewhere that the cat doesn't like.

Cats don't growl "like dogs" they growl like cats, because they are cats, and cats growl.

Since you feed feral cats, he possibly is growling at them, warning them that inside the house is his territory.

My Baby ( 1/98 ) used to sit in the window and growl when he saw people coming to the house. All it took was a strange car pulling into the drive way.

Lucy runs to the front room and growls at the garbage trucks. It is normal feline behavior.

Yes, territorial with a bit of uncertainly (spooky noise/person). It's just like how some cats have to be only cats because they're just too territorial to accept another cat, and sometimes dog, into the home - but luckily most cats are not like this.

a cat that likes to do this does that mean they wil lbe an only cat in a household usually? Is that how humane societies can tell if a cat can never live with other cats?

The only way to tell if a cat will accept other cats is to try them with other cats. As long as there isn't any serious aggression or extreme fear, it can usually be worked out.

And no to the first question, it was just a comparison of how to some cats their territory is their territory and no one elses (but the lucky humans that they let live with them ).
I have one that growls at strangers, strange cats, and dogs, but loves over cats after he's been properly introduced. I suppose the thing he hates the most in just new situations since they make him uncertain/fearful.

Oh, a girl. No wonder, females can be more territorial. And yes, she does now own the place.

i always found males to be more dominant and territorial? I always thought females were the more fragile ones that needed protecting from males lol

With cats? Unaltered toms do not protect female cats. They fight and drive other toms off to protect their right to breed - that's all they care about. Females will have their home territory -as that means food/survival, kittens, and sometimes other cats they bond with that they will fight for. More or less like lion behavior. (except some cats aren't social with their own kind)

When you neuter you remove much of what a male cat fights for, but spaying removes very little of what a female cat would fight for if pushed to it.

I have a cat that growls to let me know he's done with me trying to comb him - he's an outside cat - and, I listen to his warning - I quit doing whatever he's unhappy about.
