Are you saying TNR as in trap, neuter and release? If they are not neutered they will be extremely territorial.

You can go to petfinder.org and put your zip code on the left and get a list of rescue groups in your area. You might be able to get some help sooner if you contact as many rescue groups as you can.

Hopefully someone can help you get a hold of this before there are even more cats and kittens.

ETA... and unfortunately, if you cannot find any rescue group to help you TNR them, then the best thing to do is not to feed them

even the female cats are fighting though is it common for male and female ferals to fight like this? I thought the opp sex would get along?

Not if they are not spayed and neutered, out in the wild fending for themselves. They can also be very loud when it comes to matting. Another male fighting over a female and/or a female fighting off a male.

If they are not fixed, the males will fight over the females and the females often get stuck in the middle, or trying to fight off the males. As Pam said, they can be noisy when mating too.

Colonies don't always get along, but they choose to be with each other, one that don't do well in the colony typically leave or don't survive.

By supplying food, you are creating a new colony and every time a new one appears, they will fight for dominance. They typically do calm down a little once they have that hierarchy in place, but as soon as a new cat shows up, they start fighting again.

Do you have a backyard? Could you build an enclosure in part of it? (Like an aviary but for cats.) Until you can get them fixed, you could trap them and cage the females...they may fight unless the enclosure is roomy, but that's still better than having them become exponential cats.

Yeah, this sounds like a good idea, if you want and can do this.

The sign of a good TNR is not only to make the TNR, but also to take in them who seems to be fairly easy to foster. Ie the apparent dumped/stray homecats, the kittens, and the friendly semiferals.

If possible. Not all groups have the resources...

Even among real feral born there are always at least some who are friendlier and thus easier to foster. While some other are almost impossible.

Good luck!

Most likely the cat you found isn't a purebred from a breeder that was going to be a prized Momma cat producing award winning expensive kittens. Do the responsible thing for the cat and our ever growing pet population and have the lil girl SPAYED! She'll have a better life for it!

I would also be nervous about Craigs List. You really don't know who is getting your cat and what might happen to it. But if you do choose that route, definitely ask for an adoption fee to cover vet bills, food etc, request to do a home visit and get vet references. For sure don't give them up for free because it is a site well known for people getting unpaid cats from and doing really terrible things to them.

Be extremely careful, there are a lot of bat sh*t crazy yahoos out there.

Did you have any luck with a rescue group calling you back about TNR?

You cannot let them meet. Keep this girl cat in your bedroom if you must, but do not let her meet your room mate's cat yet. You do not know what she could be carrying and, yes, she would likely jump right on that cat. There are some pretty nasty viruses that can be transmitted through bites.

Reading your description of this female cat here - and everyone will probably jump on me for this. But keep her locked up and don't make a spay appointment yet. Get her checked for FIV/FeLV, dewormed, treated for fleas and scanned for a microchip. Talk to your vet about having her belly shaved and having her checked by ultrasound if they can't find a scar.
Your description of her sounds like someone's lost cat. The fact that she looks good either means she was lost recently and/or could be spay. I've seen that pushier - chase off all intruder cats behavior out of a lot more spay females than I have unspay ones.

In females? Maybe they need another hobby since kitten raising is out of the question?
Joking aside, I think it's more related to age. Your older girls will be more set in their ways. And while there can be older unspay females running around loose.. they're not as likely since that life style (heats, pregnancy, not being regularly fed, disease) takes a toll on them pretty young.

Again, get her scanned for a chip. If there isn't one and you're keeping her you can make the regular plans for vet care - while you could do a deworming, de-flea, all vacs, and spay (if she isn't) at the same time, if she's tame that would be something some to break up over two visit to reduce the risk of well.. death.

I suggest you read up on introducing cats on here - and most importantly keep her inside if you're going to keep her!

It's as good an explanation of any. They lead complex and busy lives to keep from getting bored. I haven't seen increased aggression first hand (maybe because these were fixed as kittens) but have heard some spayed females may actually expand the territory they patrol. Very interesting.

As expected, this lady had already been altered....

So the cat most likely left the property of their owner and became fair "game." It sounds like this one is still pretty nervous about her situation. Did you try a follow up with the vet on these possible litter issues ?

^I just seen that. Sometimes there's just a little bit of info/behavior that tips one off. I strongly suspected that Siri was already spay when I took her in, I should have listened to my intuition as she acted like a spay female - it would have saved her being opened up.

I'm sure there's a lot more to why some female cats get like that. Most of us can understand the basics, but not everything going on in a cats head. Which is too bad, when introducing another cat to an older female like this it can be a challenge.
