Weird behaviour around strawberries....

I am completely flummoxed by Da Magpie. Yesterday, bought strawberries and she showed an unseemly interest in the bag and the contents. She exhibited behaviour that is seen with most cats and catnip. She tried to roll on the package, and rubbed and chewed on my fingers after I fixed myself a snack of berries.

Any insight into this??

Our family cat Midori has an old almost erotic attraction to fruits. She likes to rub them with her cheeks and even licks grapes but doens't seem to want to actualy eat them.

Ootay (5/09) used to go bonkers over bagged apples. I'd put the bag on the floor and she'd roll and rub herself all over them.

If she has never done this before around strawberries consider that it may be something that was sprayed on them. Fruit tends to have a lot of problems with insects (thus pesticides), hot house ones need a lot of fertilizers, and others often have some type of added preservative. Wash all fruit thoroughly before letting your kitty around it or eat it yourself.

None of the other cats reacted to the berries beyond a cursory look/sniff and decided they ain't fit cat food, and I don't remember her acting like this last year but I can't remember what I had for supper last night, so that is no indication. She had no interest in the fruit out of the container as much as in the container, at least when I stuck a berry under her nose, she didn't care one way or another and I did get that "Are you NUTS??' look from her. I am still puzzled by it. Going to try again (I love strawberries, so no problem) and see the reaction. It's just so odd.

Probably the container just smells good to her. Jamie goes into ecstasy rubbing himself on our wood chipper after it's been used, and sometimes does the same thing with the lawnmower. Grapes, on the other hand, are really "scary" in his opinion, whether homegrown or store-bought. We assume he associates grapes with wasps.

Fluffy, who will eat absolutely anything, gets excited over strawberries. If I give her one, she will look at me as if to say "for me?" and pats her paws. Then she will sniff it and lick it before scarfing it down and looking for more.

When I brought home strawberries the first time since adopting Daisy, she went crazy, jumping up on the Forbidden Counter and trying to chew her way through the plastic container. Now I have to keep strawberries in the fridge. She goes crazy for them, has to have them, but doesn't eat them. DH and I were just talking about this last night, wondering if maybe she ate wild strawberries when she was a stray.

Sounds like she is having a personal moment of aromatic bliss and stimulation (an extremely odd attraction to) from the plastic container or some scent left on it.........It really is and will remain a mystery, just as all crazy kitty actions will!

Daisy has proved me wrong. The very evening I write that she doesn't really eat strawberries, I sit down for a nice late night snack of strawberries and chocolate. She is instantly all over me. So, I give her a little bit of strawberry, careful not to let her have even the tiniest bite of poisonous chocolate. She ate the strawberry in a few gulps and came back for more. I stand corrected. Daisy does eat strawberries, she just doesn't eat them whole. I have to break off little bites for her.

Tomorrow will tell the tale, going shopping, and will get berries again. Hopefully, she won't be as much of a pest. Now she is cleaning hay bits off my pants, silly girl.

Lucky loves fruit , as soon as she sees it she comes running. Apples are her favorite . Gus doesn't seem to care for fruit. He gets crazy for grass. I pick it for him and bring in the house. he goes crazy

Well, it was apparently a one off thing - she couldn't have cared less about the berries I bought this time, totally ignored them and the packaging.....cats are weird
