Hi everyone,
Does anyone know about Dr. Pitcairn? I've been reading his book, can't recall the exact title but it's about natural health care for dogs and cats. Since Schweppie has CRF, I was reading the section on kidney disease. In it, there is a recipe that contains ground chicken or turkey, some safflower oil, enriched white rice and some vitamins (taurine, vitamin A, C etc.) I asked one of the vets at hte clinic where I work and she said it was okay and that I should first do a kidney profile first, then another one after 6 weeks. She also suggested eggs which I agree with since they don't have a lot of phosphorus but good quality protein.

I'd like your opinion on this...he's eating Medi-cal Mature since he refuses to eat any of the kidney diets now but I'd like to get him off this food. I just figure, natural would be a lot better...

Thanks in advance for your help!

Natural is often better, but it depends on many things. In many cases, a prescription diet is better for particular health problems.

If your vet thinks the proposed diet would work, then I don't see a problem. I would do as your vet suggests and do the kidney profiles to make sure nothing is drastically changing.

Good luck!

Great! Thanks everyone for your, as always, sage and wise advice! I am just about do a kidney profile on little Schweppie right now! (I'm at work as I type this...on my break of course!) I will let you know how the diet goes. I also have to find all the ingredients in the right amounts. I'm glad to know that you guys like Dr. Pitcairn...I've had the book for a while but didn't really delve into it until recently. thanks again!
