Stacey, this is not the same person, that's why it is confusing to Benjamin.

Benjamin - Stacey is talking about someone else who posted on the site about a different issue at a different time.
Stacey, that person was in the USA, not England, it must have been someone else

We have a local shelter that does not adopt to people with children under ten, but the other three shelters all adopt to people with children (within reason, if the kids are pulling out of the cats at the shelter they say no)

The RSPCA is not the only shelter in your area, so check with the ones Laurie posted above and Cats Protection as well to see if someone handed her in, they can get into cars etc and be found quite a distance from home so call them all.

An update on her whereabouts, I've contacted the RSPCA and they will contact me if someone phones.
Hi Benjamin,

I see there are lots of good people already helping you, so I just wanted to pop in here to wish you good luck, and please ask you to reconsider... I hope you do... I know you do love your little girl very much, and will do what's best for her. She will be safer and healthier if spayed.

Please keep us posted, and I will be checking this thread... All the best of luck for a safe return :vi bes:

I agree with Laurie with the Cat Chat link i was looking for it this morning as ive been using it to help my partners dad rescue some former ferals and barn cats its really imformative and very helpful, plese do have a read of it

there not that many shelters where i live i think theres only a handfull in the northeast - that i could find but they are all full to bursting point iits more benifical to help a cat that already exsits rather than bring new ones into the world

Hello everyone

Thank you for all your kind replies and helpful information. Not knowing too much about cats, I assumed the RSPCA was the only shelter in my area. I only wish I knew this information a few years back. I will phone them shelters if the situation hits critical.

You do raise a very good point about a sense of good feeling for helping stray cats. It would be very nice to help shelter kittens that need homes. However if Misty was to return pregnant, which is almost certainly possible, isn't there a time period for the option to abort kittens?

I will get my cat spayed if she returns. I wasn't aware of the many problems with unspayed cats in Britain. However I'm getting more doubtful by the minute that she won't return. Its been two days and every passing second seems minutes, I have very little hope now. Hopefully I'm just overreacting.

Really, you should call the shelters as soon as possible, they only have to keep them for the owners for a few days before they put them up for adoption or euthanise them if they have no space.

There is a time period for a spay/abortion if pregnant, but that is a decision you would have to make with your vet. Different vets have different time periods for it and some will not do it.

I'm very happy to see you're willing to spay her! I hope you girl comes home. Have you went around asking neighbors if they've seen her - if so, have you went around and ask yet again?

For her safe return.

Do go to the shelters soon and look for the kitty. Here in the US, shelters only have to hold strays for 72 hours- after that they can be adopted out or euthanized!

Im glad to hear you are planning to spay her. She will be a happier, healthier pet. As far as aborting the litter, it really comes down to the vet. Some wont do it at all, and some will do a spay/abort up until the due date! Each vet has their own policy. There are some risks with spay during late pregnancy, but you have to decide between your vet if those risks outweigh the risks associated with the delivery.

If you and your vet decide to continue the pregnancy, please be sure the kittens are spayed and neutered before placing them in homes. She can be spayed once the kits are weaned.

Good luck Benjamin - we are all hoping she returns. I have had cats go missing and come back up to two weeks later. And if she has gone looking for a mate, it may be a few days as she is likely to meet a number of males and will mate with all of them. Sometimes kittens have different fathers as a result. But the important thing is that she comes back safely.

By the way, all of my cats are rescues, most of whom I got as kittens. There is a tremendous sense of achievement in taking in a young kitten, especially a sick one, and watching it get healthy and happy in a real home. The bond that grows between you is fantastic. Many people here on the site could tell you incredible stories of how they got their cats, the time and patience and love that was necessary, but how rewarding it all is.

Sending many vibes that she comes home soon!!!!!!!!!!!

I would talk to the neighbors and call around to all the shelters.

I just wanted to personally say "thank you!" for listening to our advice. This post made my day! Don't worry, you will be a "cat expert" in no time. I am pretty sure that she will come back, she's probably off hunting tom cats to mate. After she is done, she will come home.

I forgot that there is no rabies in England, lol.

I do hope you have rang the rescues on the list in case she has been taken to one of them, and also all the vets in your area (not just the ones you use) - all vets have a lost and found list. I am glad you will get her spayed when she returns - is she microchipped, as if not, it would be an idea to get that done as well? It might be worth getting her FIV/FeLV tested in a few months, just in case she has picked anything up from being mated. I am not that far from you, near Manchester, and quite a few of the rescues near here do have rules with children, but not all do, so I would ask your family members to go to one of the rescues, saving two + lives (the cat they take on and the cat(s) that space allows them to help) is much more rewarding. 2 days is nothing for a cat that is in heat.

Thank you for all your kind wishes and advice.

I have been to my neighbours and they will alert me if they see her. I have also popped into the local shelters and gave a picture of misty to them. I am to see a person from the RSPCA shelter on Monday to take me around the kennels and I will take misty to the vet if she is to return.

For now its the waiting game. I will keep you updated.
Thanks again.

I had a male disappear for 2+ weeks, he came back looking rough, I think he was after the lost orange tabby to have a little fun. I need to get them(3 outside males, 1 inside male, all my females are spayed 3 outside, 1 inside) neutered but need to get money back together. My wallet disappeared so my neutering money is going to replace my driver's license, child support credit card, boyfriend's ATM card(yes he knew I had it), new Discover card(if my parents will give me one, I only use it for gas, and other essentials that they tell me I can use it for.) That is enough to neuter at least 2 cats(including pain killer shot.)

I want to say last summer I had 4 un spayed cats give us 15 kittens(2 of them had 9 kittens total.) I still have 5, 2 I adopted and brought inside and I have 3 black cats that nobody wanted. All of my cats inside and out have feline leukemia, so if one of my males met your female she would most likely end up with feline leukemia, which is fatal.

I'm glad you are getting her spayed. I hope she comes home soon safe and sound. She might wait until she is through with her heat to some back home.

Hi guys its me again.

Just want to update everyone and say shes returned! This morning we saw her shadow behind the blinds and she came in when we called her. Very happy.

Also we were in the process of getting a stray cat. At the moment we have decided to keep her and hopefully the kennels will still hand her over with the new circumstances.

Guess I'm off to the vet today :P

Am really pleased to hear this - please do keep the two cats separate though until you know neither are harbouring anything from being outside - some viruses can take a couple of weeks to show.

Hello everyone

We took Misty to the vet and she is very healthy, besides worms and on the thin side a little. She isn't pregnant and the vet think she might have been trapped in a shed somewhere.

This Tuesday I'm taking her back to get checked again and spayed. I will be getting the new cat on Monday.

Ok, what would be the sensible amount of time?

Will keep you updated

Glad she got a good report from the vet, glad she wasn't pregnant. Good luck for Tues. Good luck for the new cat on Monday, I would keep them apart for at least a fortnight, maybe a bit longer if she has worms, you need to make sure she is worm free, or she will pass them on to newbie. What is newbies background - is he neutered, wormed, de-flead etc?
