Finn just sprayed! Argh!

I'm a little overwhelmed at the moment. And, for the record, overwhelmed in this situation means angry, upset, annoyed, frustrated, concerned, fearful, and obsessive. Why? Well, because, right in front of me, Finnegan sprayed the wall tapestry in my bedroom.

First, let me say that I've seen him urinate today and all appears well. However, I will be calling the vet first thing in the morning to get him in just to check for a possible UTI. However, there's been no straining, no increase or decrease in output, and he is eating and drinking normally. He doesn't appear to be in pain and he has peed and pooped throughout the day without issue. Also, his energy level is fine and he's not acting out of sorts in the slightest. Which leads me to the conclusion that either he sprayed for a reason unbeknownst to me (ie. behavioral) or he sprayed because of a medical issue.

Finn is 6 months old. He's neutered, all of my other cats are also altered, and nothing has changed recently. I scoop their litter pans (and we have many, many boxes) multiple times per day and he has never had an issue with spraying before. I don't have any enzymatic cleaner in the house so that will have to wait until morning, but none of my cats have ever sprayed before or eliminated outside of their boxes so I know he's not marking over another urine mark. I should mention that he sprayed while standing in his litter pan (in this case, he was in a small box). Is it possible he overshot the mark? But, really, I did see tail quivering and he usually sits low to the floor while urinating. I am not angry with him, but it's a frustrating situation and I'm now worrying that this will become a new behavior. And, that's not acceptable (but, like I said, he will be seen by his veterinarian to ensure it's not a medical issue). I have Feliway plug-ins all throughout the house and there's not been any huge stressors that I can see. So, why? Why now? And, am I supposed to expect this to become a regular thing?

I should mention one last thing. When I ran my hand on the wet spot, it did not have the typical ammonia smell. It really had no scent whatsoever. Is that normal?

I'm sorry this was long and jumbled, but I needed to vent. I've washed the area for the night and will go about cleaning with an enzymatic cleaner in the morning. I guess I just need some reassurance.

Alison, I wouldn't freak out just yet... After all he was inside of the litterbox, which unfortunately had low sides and a tapestry behind it? So... I don't really see that as unacceptable behavior... Just my opinion...

I think you need higher litterboxes - time for the good old storage boxes. I would go to Big Lots or Target and replace my litterboxes with large storage bins. If he was inside it, all you need are higher walls. Mine are Sterilite, as they are cheaper than rubbemaid. A large one runs for about $6 at Big Lots.

Just my opinion, for what's worth... I wouldn't qualify that as a behavior issue, and wouldn't even worry about feliway or the vet just yet. If he was doing this outside of the box, sure, but that's not the case...

One of my 2 cats will spray within the litter box - so I am able to manage that by having high sides on the boxes. If he has to spray at least it is in a predictable place.

It is early springtime - indoor spayed/nuetered kitties can indeed feel some impact from all the pheromones in the air.

I have noticed what you did about the smell being milder than urine. I would have expected "spray" to smell more than regular urine. I suppose it has a chemical message in there that my human nose does not pick up.

Well, I'm a lot calmer than I was last night. That's for sure....

Thank you for all of the support and suggestions. I did call my vet this morning and brought Finnegan in for a check-up and to ensure he didn't have a UTI. Even though this was a one-time experience, I wanted to make sure there was nothing medically wrong. And, when I called my vet this morning, she was in agreement. I have a wellness plan and insurance for my pets for this very reason. The vet visit cost me nothing and, in return, I was given peace of mind. Had it been even the start of a UTI, it would have been better to be checked into and treated before getting more severe. So, while my reaction may have been a bit over-the-top, I'm happy I made the decision I did.

The fact that he was in the litter pan when he sprayed does make me think he possibly missed the mark. However, he does usually pee while crouched down low which means that his stance was atypical for him. The litter pan he was using was different than the ones I usually have in these places. I hadn't even thought about that last night. Yesterday was cleaning day and I had scrubbed all of their litter boxes and replaced them with the old ones I used to use while they were drying. The ones I use regularly are Sterilite containers and the ones I replaced them with during cleaning yesterday were the typical low-sided pans sold at the pet store. So, that could explain away most everything. The locations of the pans were in the same place, but they were not their usual boxes and were quite a deal smaller. That, too, could have definitely played a part in the matter.

As for everything else, if it was (or is) a behavioral issue, I'll work with him on it. But, you're all right, we're not there yet and we'll cross that bridge if and when we come to it. I cleaned the area well with an enzymatic cleaner and have put back all of their usual litter pans. I always have Feliway running, so that should help. And, so, I think everything is okay. At least for the moment...

So, like I said, everything is a lot brighter right now. I'm not a freaked out, obsessing meowmy and all is well. Thank goodness for that !

Thank you all again for your support and advice. It's definitely made all the difference.

Awww hun, I'm glad you feel better and that Finn doesn't have a UTI. My Imhotep will also spray when he's in the litter box but it's never an issue because I have very large Rubbermaid tote bins as litter boxes, so it's never outside the box. I really think it's a dominance thing with him, but as long as it's only in the box, it doesn't bother me at all.
