If a tom cat with fiv mates with a feral queen would the offspring have fiv even if he does not hurt them?

FIV is spread through deep bite wounds and possibly through the birth canal. If the tom bites the queen while mating and passes the disease on, the kittens could be born infected from the mother.

Every kitten from a litter should always be tested.

If this dear kitty is at risk of being put down, all because he's FIV+, have you considered trying to find a FIV+ Rescue/Sanctuary for him? There are many in the U.S. Just do a search on Google (I see you're in California) for "feline rescue FIV California" or "feline sanctuary FIV California." I found a couple just doing a quick search. There ARE these types of rescues/sanctuaries intended for FIV and FeLV+ cats.

Here's a page I found that has a huge list of NO KILL shelters in California (not sure if it covers the entire state or not). Maybe it would be a good idea to contact a bunch of them to find out if they can take FIV+ cats or know of a sanctuary for such a cat. Sometimes people will even ADOPT an FIV+ cat if they already have one, too.

Here's one I found in Cali that has a sanctuary for FIV/FeLV cats (North County Humane Society - which is NO KILL):

About Our Rescue Group
AFAR/NCHS has been around since 1977 - We are spay/neuter advocates; our shelter rescues cats from local as well as national disasters (Katrina/Rita). We house 200-300 cats. We are a no-kill shelter which provides a sanctuary for older/harder to place cats; felv/fiv sanctuary with indoor/outdoor access; we partner with the Cat Habitat (the largest feral cat sanctuary on the central coast) Director of animal Care has been awared the cat lovers award from Cat Fancy (2005) and for her community work on behalf of the environment and cats was nominated and accepted in the Heritage Oaks Registery (2006-2007) Who's Who; There is a very dedicated staff of 10 and numerous volunteers. We have a AAA rating for cleanliness issued by our county. NCHS is a cageless facility where each cat is known by name and treated to a luxury life, just like living in their very own home.

Here, also, is another.....a rescue in WA state that has a place called "FIV-land" just for FIV+ kitties. It says on their page that they do accept FIV+ cats from all over, including California:

Hopefully someone will consider all viable options for this poor kitty before just putting him down. He could live many, many good years!

No, FIV is spread through deep bite wounds only. Unless he is a fighter, the danger of living a stray life is more to him than any other cat, because he is extremely susceptible to infections.

FIV cats really do need to live indoor lives, alone, or with other indoor cats, for their own protection. I hope he can find a forever home or a good foster home, rather than being put down. He sounds lovely

he is with a friend right now we took him out of the shelter as soon as they called and said he tested postiive for fiv, my friend has a rescue cat currently lthats pregnant that she rescued out of someones trunk god knows what they were going to do with it they locked her in there and left the car! SO the fiv ex tom is kept seperate. Shes not sure if she wants to keep him or find a place through and fiv group. Thanks for the info.

The lady at the shelter kept insisiting that there are hundreds of fiv negative young cats to adopt out and that no one will take a 5+ year old rough looking huge ex tom cat.

The fact also hes a rieally big cat looks kinda mean and has scars from his previous street life as a tom cat.

I still have another beat up cat that has been comming around my placer eating food daily he looks beat up and i am pretty sure hes feral just always starving. Hes missing patches of fur and has a leg wound. I dont know if its male or female yet.

I am in the sacramento area btw is anyone here from that area? god there are so many cats running around here i did not have this in canada. I think the cold weather in canada kept feral populations low but here in ca the weather is nice cats could probably breed in the winter!
