Hey everyone!

I joined this community a while back when I adopted my first cat, Luchiana (aka Lucky). I learned so much from you guys/girls as I first started out, and Lucky and I got along splendidly.

Since then, Lucky has moved on to another caring home, as she moved in with one of the Autistic clients I work with (along with his family). After one of his parents passed away, he needed a friend. They've made an even greater pairing!

But it wasn't long until I started missing my lil' buddy, even with the occasional visits and frequent updates. Thus, I've adopted again! This time, however, I've followed the lead of a few of my friends and taken home a pair. Even with my parents (who have two Chocolate Labs), I've seen just how nice it is for an animal to have a fellow pal.

The first is Victoria. She's a Tiger and nearly 5 years old ... friendly and affectionate but also a bit cautious. Samantha is the other. She's also a Tiger and estimated to be around one year of age. Literally, she's like a little dog. Incredibly sweet. As soon as I petted her, I had to have her in my life. Too adorable for words.

So ... we've all been home for about 5 hours now. And where did they move to right off the bat? Under the bed! Haha, but I was thrilled to see that they both shared the space well ... and seem comfortable with each other. There has been some occasional (minor) hissing, but the couple of instances ceased with a firm, "Hey!"

If I call for Samantha, she comes out. I've picked her up and shown her the spacious apartment. She's now camped out on the window sill as she checks out the neighborhood. Getting more comfortable by the minute. As for Victoria, she's still under the bed. In fact, that wasn't good enough for her. She decided to move into a small hole in the liner and settle inside the box spring!

When I called for her, she'd poke her head out ... and if I reached in to pet her, she was fine. But I was afraid she'd get too comfortable with the "anti-social" role and removed the liner. As I type this, she's popped out from under the bed is looking around a bit. Haha, ever so cautiously. Oh, and she's back under the bed!

ANYWAY, I'll post pictures as soon as I can. Any advice in helping two cats get along? I purchased one mega cat litter box hoping they'll share. I also picked up two little beds (one for each), and two stackable "apartments" near the window. Samantha's sleep atop the stacked pair now. Haha, love it.

Let me know what you all think!

And here's Victoria. The first was from the Shelter's website. The second is from a couple minutes ago, haha.

Oh they are SO beautiful!
Congrats on your precious new additions!
I'm sure Victoria just needs a little more time to adjust and will be quite comfy and happy in no time. Sounds like the girls just need some time and patience and everything will be fine.

Congratulations on your new furbabies! My advice:

Get another litter box or two more. You should have at least two, three is better, for two cats.

(I have four boxes three cats. When I had four cats I had five litter boxes)

Get some feliway plug ins to help them feel more secure and less territorial with each other.

Don't force anything, let them adjust at their own speed.

Otto -

Thanks for the litter box advice. In all the articles I've read (tonight), I've seen that one recurring recommendation. I almost scooted out tonight! I'll pick up two more tomorrow.

I took Victoria (the oldest) out from under the bed earlier tonight and closed the bedroom door, so hiding under the bed wasn't an option. They do really well being in the same room and even in close proximity ... but as soon as Samantha attempts to force an interaction, Vicky hisses. No fights as of yet. Samantha just walks away.

Both come to me for attention individually. Samantha is so cute ... she continually tries to get close to Victoria, but for now ... she just ain't having it. I've since re-opened the bedroom door to let everyone just chill out.

I can tell Victoria's a bit stressed. She lets out this slight groan from the belly after I let out a "Hey!" when she hisses at her roomie. She immediately stops, but then sulks.

I'm going to be very, very patient with this. And from everything I've read, they're actually doing extremely well considering it's only been 1/2 a day!

Kailie -

Thank you! I, too, share your optimism.

You really shouldn't interfere with their hissing at each other.

That is how they communicate and work out their relationship.
