weird ? about urine....

My cat and my newly adopted stray are getting on GREAT! They are even using the same litter box.

My question or concern is - the new cat when he urinates the litter does not clump as it does with my other cat .... it becomes muddy and hard to scoop.

Ive had him maybe 3 weeks now and when he had his own box it was clumping - but I DID notice it was definitely a different consistency than my cat.

Does this mean anything??

(PS I realize this is more of a health question - but there are always VERY heavy topics over there and I feel guilty posting goofy questions like this)

The people in the health forum can help more, it doesn't matter if he is a stray or not when it comes to their health.

I would bring a urine sample to the vet to have it checked, he could have a urinary tract infection, or if you mean muddy as in a lot of urine per clump, then it could be a lot of things

yeah... sorry its not hte urine thats muddy - its the litter - unless hes peeing ALOT and its making it muddy??

Keep a very close eye in him and get him in to see a vet for it as soon as possible. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

If you notice him licking himself more than usual, licking his lips/acting odd, and especially taking a while in the litter box (straining) then he has to get to the vet right away.

I wonder if it can be as simple as he isnt burying his pee?

Buried pee becomes the well known "hard cooked eggs". Not buryied becomes - well, a little dryed out lake, usually with a little hole in the middle of it (the hole where the pee- beam struck down...).

Sounds it familiar?


If not, a phone to the vet cant hurt.

I would say that it's the mechanics of the litter box and the depth at which the urine is deposited. What happens is that the new cat digs down to the bottom of the litter and pees on the plastic bottom and then burries it. With a large volume of urine at the very bottom of the litter pan it tends to remain in a muddy state. I have found to correct this, it's best to keep the litter at a depth of around 2.5". This way it's deep enough so that the dug hole will cave in on itself and help absorb the urine at the very bottom. If the litter is too deep them the cat will dig it out of the litter pan. If too shallow it tends not to absorb the urine properly at the bottom.

I'm having the same problem with my newly adopted kitty right now. I scoop out the litter box(I use the clump) and at the very bottom I find the urine sticks to the front edge of the scoop because it's soft and muddy. Cats love to dig and some get carries away in the litter box.

Have you every tried to get rid of the leftover litter in the garden? Well it get moist and stays a muddy mess.

As suggested above, always keep a close eye on your kitty's bathroom habits, it could mean that there is something wrong.

Thanks...

I know he was burying it - got it all over - thats why hes now sharing because this one has a lid. Its possible he doesnt have much room anymore to do so.

But I will keep an eye on him. He seems ok otherwise.
