I've been coloring my hair myself for years. I started going grey in my teens, and by the time I was 30 I couldn't stand it anymore. My natural color was medium auburn; I use medium reddish-brown hair color. It costs less than $10 a month to dye it, so I do. Every so often I think I should just let it go silver/grey and get it over with, but my DH doesn't want me to. My hair is fairly long (mid back), so I'd probably have to color it grey instead of letting it grow out naturally.
I get a lot of compliments on my hair, so I guess the dye-jobs haven't hurt it much. You wouldn't believe how often someone says, "Is that your real hair color?" I tell them, "It used to be."

I used to color all the time when I was a teen, but not now. I like my natural hair color.
I also never blow dry my hair.

I am determined to grow out my natural hair color again, got about 2 inches of virgin hair at the roots, and grow baby, grow!
Though with the weather getting nice agan, my inner blonde wants me to bleach! What I see in the mirror is not me, I am a blonde!
I am trying not to listen, I am growing my hair long, and chemials are not really good for that whole process. Dry staw blonde, good to the eye with lots and lots of help from product, not good over all for the condtion of my fine hair.
You sound so much like me!!!

I am due for a good haircut and colour, but this time I think I'll try something completely different and go for red. Real red done at the salon, not the horrible orangey tint that my hair turned after I tried dyeing it at home.
I've coloured my hair for years, although I grow it out all the time instead of getting proper touch-ups, so I know my natural hair colour, and frankly it's not that inspiring.

I love coloring my hair just for a change because I despise cutting it. I always keep my length down to about an inch below the back of my bra band. I cant do it any shorter or I feel naked. During the winter I normally dye it myself brown/black (its growing out now because of $$) but during the summer I have a friend who will dye my hair blonde for about 20 bucks and me buying the dye. So its like 40 total. She does it instead of skipping rows for highlights she does every row so my dark brown ends up looking like the highlights and the blonde is the main color.....mmmmmmmmmm this warm weather and now this thread makes me wanna give her a call to do my hair!!! I love being blonde in the summer!

I let my hair grow out years ago and was wearing a wig for quite some time. When I left my job of 22 years I decided to let it grow out and my hair is a very nice gray/white color, a lot like Jay Leno. I even have that dark spot as Jay does buy mine is at the crown of my neck. Hey even with this color hair, I have met and am dating a younger man
I had worn a wig for years because my hair has always been so thin, that is the reason I keep it short. When I was coloring my hair, I did it myself all the time. Then came the time I had to wear a wig because of chemo treatments. As someone else said, I also have had compliments on the color of my hair from male co-workers at my very last job. It was nice to hear.

I used to bleach my hair blonde many years ago and simply got tired of the upkeep, cost and damage to my hair. I too was born a "towhead" and now my natural color is light brown with reddish highlights. I'm about 25% gray and actually can't wait till I'm all gray!

I've only had my hair dyed professionally a couple times (like maybe two?) but I've dyed it myself quite a few times. I used to dye it auburn when I was in high school. Now I keep it closer to my regular color (a darkish gold brown) just to cover the silver hair. I just use the semi permanent color, though, the ones that only last 3 months or so and then wash out. I have a "poltergeist" strip of white in my hair and it has become resilient to the dye I usually use, so I stopped bothering. It's right on my part so it is VERY noticeable, but I don't care anymore. My hair will also be white, instead of grey, once I get there completely.

I do my roots once a month faithfully. I keep as close to my natural dark brown/black color as possible, just keeping the gray at bay. My daughter made me promise I would not let it go gray. When I worked at a salon, bartered services, and it was red for a little while, and I hated it. I got it back to my natural color with the help of a very talented colorist. One summer when I rode around with the sunroof open a lot, one of them talked me in to putting small colored streaks that could only be seen when the sun hit them. Blue, purple and black. They looked very cool for about a week, when they turned green and my hair looked like Marine Corps camouflage.

My hair was a rich chestnut brown as a girl and really, really thick.

I started messing around with henna when I was in college. I was too chicken for a long time to use anything but semi permanent. I once bought the wrong color and my hair turned out eggplant purple!

I started turning grey at the temples and crown in my mid 30's... and in the last few years have been getting my hair professionally colored, harking back more to my childhood color of rich brown with some red highlights. (single process color.)

However, last fall, whatever the stylist put on my head caused a terrible reaction. I had sores and scabs on my scalp for weeks. I have been a bit gunshy since... just got it cut recently and it is definitely salt-n-pepper with much more salt that I would like. So I have a box of Loreal Preference upstairs. My greys don't take color very well, so it will more likely just look like highlights. I will be silvery white when I am older. I'm just not ready to give in to that at age 50.

I color my hair once every 8-12 months if I'm feeling the need for a change. Currently my natural color is growing out/fading from the black that I had last summer. My hair is a medium-dark brown. I had small pink streaks in it with the black, which is now just plain highlights. The black has all faded as well. It cost $208 because my hair is to lower-middle back and 5.5 hours to do. Not doing that again anytime soon!

I tend to go darker with my hair, because going lighter costs a lot more, and I actually think I look pretty good with black hair
Dont feel like sitting in the chair for a long time anytime soon though, and do have more important things to spend my $$ on currently.

I go in fits and spurts.

For several years I was doing it myself at home, but as I get more grey, the more the grey was showing as the colour grew out. So I decided that I was going to stop and let it grow out naturally. Not hard to do since I have short hair.

For a year or so I had my mousy brown with grey, and then last year decided to start colouring it again.

This time I went to a salon and went for a lighter shade of auburn than I was doing at home, plus blonde highlights. The idea was that as my hair grew, the grey wouldn't be as noticable, and it worked.

So now a year later I'm still colouring my hair. In fact I was supposed to go today but my knee was sore and I decided I needed to rest it so rebooked the appointment for next weekend.

Just wanted to comment,
laureen227, you look so BEAUTIFUL with your new short and lighter style..awesome!

And I'm like another poster here who has this huge patch of white (not grey, it's so white it's almost translucent!) on the top of my crown, right where the center part is (just like Bonnie Raitt). The rest of my head is dark (dishwater) blonde. I color it, but the color DOES NOT TAKE on my white stripe...I use permanent color even, but after like 2 washings, the white comes through again! does anyone have any tips for long lasting gray coverage with color??

I started coloring my hair about 6 years ago because well I was tired of my mousy brown hair color. My stylist was so excited! I go to a Aveda salon and its $140 for cut/color/highlights and eyebrow wax. He tends to keep my color about 2-3 shades of my natural color so when it grows out its not too noticeable. I just went last week-it had been Sept 11 when I went last. I could tell the roots were growing out-the bangs still looked good though. He does not recommend washing hair every day I go every other day and depending on weekend plans I might skip an extra day. As age 52 I have very little grey (like my dad) so covering the grey isn't why I color I just like the dimensions of color!

I've never treated my hair with anything other that shampoo and conditioners. My hair is its natural color. I like the way it is so why change it.

I have naturally mousey-brown hair and have colored it auburn since I was around 17 or so. Now, it's a much lighter red and I still like it. It's more difficult to color because of the greys and whites that are there now. I used to color my hair myself, but gave up and I go to the salon every five weeks or so. And I wouldn't give that up for anything.

laureen227, how pretty you are!
