How much power should unions have?

Labatt recently announced that they are closing a local brewery and moving that work to the London, Ontario plant which operates at twice the efficiency. The London plant was recently closed when Labatt sold its US division, which was what was based out of that plant.

Some background, Labatt leases the building here and has 2 years left on the lease. They announced that they would be paying for the remainder of the lease and taking the brewing machinery with them (which they own).

Today, the unions and the NDP (political party who typically supports workers, especially unions) are calling on them government to force them to leave the machinery in the plant (well they are calling on them to stop them moving first, but if they do they want the machines and equipment left there)

I do feel for the workers losing their jobs, but really, what right do the government have to force them to leave their own machines there for someone else in the hope that another brewery moves in so the workers will be able to work in the same jobs they have now (they could not move to the London plant as workers laid off from there will get first dibs on the jobs).

Well, gee, I feel bad for the workers who are losing their jobs, but that really doesn't have anything to do with a very simple principle: that the equipment belongs to Labatt. It's their property.

When we move out of this rental accommodation, are we supposed to leave behind the appliances that belong to us? The ones provided by the landlord, sure, but our property is our property. Same goes for Labatt.

If there were a tenant waiting in the wings to open up a brewery operation in that location, who wanted to buy that equipment, it would seem logical for Labatt to at least talk with them about that, but just give up their property -- on spec, yet? NO.

I detest most Unions. They are as corrupt as the government, probably more so.

Are you in Canada ickllemiss?

I think Unions are a good thing for some workers and bad for others

ill take my dad as an example his company has just made him redundant, but the union think him and the other 1100 people that have just been laid off can claim unfair dismisal as they were not given 90 days notice of the companies intentioins

i myself had to take advice from a unioin when i worked in the motor trade because my boss bullied me

but then someone who i know was taking for a ride by his union

so basically to sum it up not all are corrupt and can be very benifical

What about for businesses? Some unions have so much bargaining power, they price their own workers out of the market, and since the business can't replace them without outrage by the union - they end up closing and moving

I'm not really a fan of unions. While it sounds great on paper and some unions are really great. Some are so large that they either over-price their workers, or make it impossible to fire someone from a job when they endanger others at the workplace.

As far as the equipment in the building... which company bought it?

sometimes they go in favour of the businesses didnt say they didnt i simplyly stated how they can actually help the workers rather than seeling them short

Labatt bought the equipment (they actually bought out a microbrewer, Lakeport, including the lease and equipment), the building is leased by them from the port authority so I would assume the port authority, unless they had a brewing company ready to come in would want Labatt to empty it so they can lease it back out to whoever wants to move in
