Today is hopefully Nera's final procedure. For those that don't know Nera is my foster cat. She has eyelid agenisis. She had one procedure to have the hairs removed around her eyes. It looked great in the begining, but unfortunately the hairs grew back. Procedure number two was to remove skin from under her eye & put it where she was missing the eye lid (this is the very simple explination). The specialist started with her visual eye in an effort to save as much sight as possible. The next thing she had done was her teeth, she had a cleaning & 3 extractions. Today she is having the same procedure as her 2nd procedure only this time it is on the other eye. In addition, he is going to try to remove some of the scar tissue she developed on the first eye. So here I sit at work, just waiting to hear how she is doing. I have grown very attatched to this sweet girl and I am just as nervous as I would be if it was one my own. The waiting must be the worst part.

Oh, you've had a long day! I hope the waiting is over now, and that you've gotten a good report about Nera.

Many vibes that she recovers well and comes home soon. Is she likely to have reasonably good vision when she's done with surgeries?

I think that people who foster cats are the greatest, and those who foster special-needs cats are unsung heroes of the universe!

Thank you all. She is doing great. This eye specialist is a great doctor & a wonderful man. For this procedure he went to bat with his corporate office & charged the shelter for only the meds. I can't even begin to thank him for taking wonderful care of my Nera Ann & for being so kind to the shelter! I get emotional just talking about it, the fact that a specialist cares so much about this one little kitty makes me want to cry.

The main point of these procedures was Nera's comfort. She has sight in her right eye, and is most likely blind in her left eye. There is nothing that can be done to improve her sight, but I am sure this has made such a difference to her comfort. Imagine having hair in your eyes all the time. Since she had no upper eye lids, that is how she lived her life for 5 years before comming to the shelter. Now not only does she have comfort, but she has eye lids. She is such a great cat she deserves to be comfortable & happy. For me the hardest part of all of this is going to be the day she is no longer in my care. I just want whoever gives her a home to understand just what a wonderful cat she is.

You foster Angels are incredible. I can imagine it will be hard to let her go, but because of her special needs, I would think the screening process will be rigorous and only the right person will have to honor of becoming her human.

I know you will keep us posted on the little lady Nera Ann.

That's great news.

It sounds like you'll need to find a nearby forever home for Nera so you can have easy visits!

I really hope there's someone out there who will fall madly in love with her so you're feeling very comfortable and excited about her new home, too. That will be the happiest ending to this story, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the perfect situation comes along for her — and for you!
