If kind of seems to me like no matter what we started out with, the majority has wound up with cats. What did I expect for a cat board, right?

1. Did you have pets when you were growing up?
When my brother was 12 or maybe 13, my parents, against their better judgement caved and allowed him a puppy, on the condition that he would take care of it. It took only days to become clear that he was not going to follow through, so they decreed that if he was not going to care for Skippy, he would need to find him a home now. He did, and that was the last pet in our own home. But there were many dogs in our extended family, a couple of whom I can definitely say I grew up with.

2. Did you have dogs or cats?
See #1

3. What do you have now
At the moment 2 cats. We have been up to three, and down to 1

1. Did you have pets when you were growing up? Yes

2. Did you have dogs or cats? One cat. We got him when I was a baby, and he lived to be 22 years old.

3. What do you have now? Three cats: Cleo, Maggie & Lola. I'll probably always have cats...can't imagine a life without them!

1. Did you have pets when you were growing up?
Yes,

2. Did you have dogs or cats?

we always had animals around: dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs. My grandfather (who we lived with) at one time raised dogs, hamsters, guinea pigs. Not all of them were pets, but some of them became pets.

3. What do you have now

I have two cats, Swanie and Cindy. These are the only pets I've had since leaving home and getting married. The reason we didn't have pets before is we did a lot of traveling and neither of us wanted to go away and leave our pets. We always befriended neighbor's pets instead

1. Did you have pets when you were growing up? Yes.
They were always treated as part of the family, without a doubt.

2. Did you have dogs or cats? We had dogs. I should say, we had one dog at a time.

Before I was born they had Weimereiner, Dutchess von Avery who was my sister's best friend and guardian. Dad said that they couldn't even discipline Sam when "her" Dutchess was around because Dutch would growl at them and protect her. She was like that from the time that Sam was born.

When I was little (maybe 1 1/2?) through 7th grade we had a Weimereiner, Dad's bird dog, Dutchess Wilhemina. She was closest to "my" dog that I ever had, but really she was Dad's.

After Dutchess passed, Dad said he didn't want another dog because it hurt too much when they left. But then my sister brought home a wiggly little black puppy. Dad was SO mad!! The puppy knew how to work him...when Mom brought her to bed ("just this one time") in the middle of the night, Felicia went over and curled up on Dad's shoulder with her head resting on his neck. He decided that the dog didn't go anything wrong, but he didn't speak to my sister (she was in high school) for 2 weeks.
That was Felicia Marie Piddle Diddo. Mom called her Felicia, and Felicia Marie when she was naughty - which was often. She was their "empty nest" kid. We often said that if we talked back like the dog did we would have been hit for distance. (Kidding, of course...) Dad called her Diddo or Dids. They were constant companions, she was absolutely his best friend.

He hasn't had another dog since Diddo passed. That and when Mom passed were the only times I saw him cry.

I wanted a cat but Dad is very, very allergic to cats.
So a dog it was.

1. Did you have pets when you were growing up? Yes, I did grow up with pets in my home. My whole family is made up of pet lovers and they were always a part of my life -- from even before I was born.

2. Did you have dogs or cats? We had both dogs and cats. However, we had cats first and usually had more than one kitty at a time. I grew up with a revolving door of cats and, as I grew older, we also had a number of dogs.

3. What do you have now? Currently, I'm owned by 4 kitties (Emory, Cassidy, Delaney, and Finnegan) and 2 dogs (a toy fox terrier named Madeline and a rat terrier/mix named Mackenzie). I also have a cockatiel, a parakeet, and a number of rescue hamsters. Oh, and goldfish.

I should also say that, in the past, I've had a number of different types of small animals as well as 2 horses. I had an appaloosa (solid colored) named Sonny and a hackney mare named Tessa. I miss all of my past pets, but, as of now, I'm at my limit...so no more for me
.

This was an interesting thread. Thank you for posting it.

1. Did you have pets when you were growing up?

Kind of.....there were always parakeets when I was a kid. And finches. Then we got a fish tank from someone who was moving so we had some goldfish until we moved and gave them away. But since my dad was in the Navy my mom said we couldn't have a cat or dog (or a hamster....I really wanted a hamster) because we might have to find a new home when we moved and that wouldn't be fair. But then when I was 10 the neighbor was giving away kittens at a yard sale......

2. Did you have dogs or cats?

So then we got 2 kitties! We never had to get rid of them; they moved with us 3 times. They're still alive....they'll be 21 in August. They live with my parents. When I was 15 my dad retired and I got a Lab puppy. She lived to be 13 and died in 2008. And I got a pet rat about the same time.

3. What do you have now?

Haha, I'm probably overcompensating for my pet deprived childhood. I have 17indoor cats (and some ferals), 3 dogs, 2 rabbits, a ferret, and 4 Russian tortoises, a couple salamanders, some land hermit crabs, and 2 fish tanks.

1. Did you have pets when you were growing up?

Yes!

2. Did you have dogs or cats?

Dogs, always dogs. My family has a history of allergies, so we mainly had poodles, because they are more hypo-allergenic than most pets. My parents also have a barn, though, and we had many barn cats when I was growing up. But we didn't name them and they were never allowed inside.

3. What do you have now

One little bitty lump of a cat!! I was always allergic to cats growing up, but I missed having a pet, and living in a condo meant that a dog was out of the question! I adopted a kitten and I have never had an allergic reaction to her. I (ashamedly) said many times when I was growing up that I "hate cats", and I never really knew I was a "cat person" until I adopted my Holland. Cats are amazing creatures, and I am so thankful that I have been able to learn about and experience their awesomeness firsthand.

1. Did you have pets when you were growing up?
Yes when I was born my mom had 2 cats already (had to be rehomed due to the move from ND to NC the Army wouldnt pay for their flight) She also got a Golden Retriever puppy after the move to NC he was born the same day as me and was always my Dudley. His full name was Sir Dudley Do-Right and we had him till he was 14 yrs old and was PTS because he couldnt walk anymore. He had Hip Dysplasia. Then we had Spooks our kitty and Zeke the german shepard that my dad got from the prisons dog breeder. He ended up passing away in my dads arms because he had epilepsy and had a major seizure. After that when him and Spooks passed we had Sophie Gimp and Pickles (cats) and then rescued Brody from the SPCA he was a german shepard/husky mix.

2. Did you have dogs or cats?
I have both now but if I had to pick between either I will always have cats! I cant live without them!

3. What do you have now
Franklin my mini doxie and the 3 kitties GiGi Hercules and Fatman!

1. Yes we had pets growing up.
2. No dogs as my father has a strong dislike of them. Yes, a couple cats, but also a rabbit, several guinea pigs and other small rodents (not all simultaneously). I had fish tanks as a teenager, which I only finally got rid of before I left for Japan.
3. I have one cat.

1. Did you have pets when you were growing up?
Yes. I'm sure if it had been entirely up to my mother we would have had more. As a child, she would bring home every stray animal she came across. It's from her I acquired my love of animals.

2. Did you have dogs or cats? dogs (and birds)

3. What do you have now? Three cats. If I had the space and money, I would have more.

I wonder how I missed this thread last month?

1. Did you have pets when you were growing up?
Yes, several.
2. Did you have dogs or cats?
Both. There were also fish, hamsters, gerbils, a rat, some rescued wild lizards (they came out of hibernation February 3 on an unusually warm day - 93F. It was to freeze that night so I caught them and kept them till it was safe to release them). Rescued baby brown bats and a red eared slider. I started keeping lizards and even a scorpion around age 14.
When I was 11-12 I also saved a bunch of toad tadpoles from a drying pool in a field and took care of them until they were all a 2-3 weeks old (after changing). ~100 baby toads eat a lot..

3. What do you have now 9 cats, 10 box turtles, and 6 geckos.

My answers are:

1. yes
2. cats
2. cats

At one time I raised Cocker Spaniels. I loved them, got tired of it and gave away the dogs. I never formed serious attachments to them.
But I have always been seriously committed to everyone of my cats. Whenever I have lost one, it has seemed like a family member died.
Yes.
dogs.
dogs and one cat.
That is very sad about your dogs that you bred, gave away, and never got attached
I am very attached to my dogs and am seriously committed to them, they are family. I bond with them way easier than my cat. But I still love my cat tons and am commited to her care for her whole life.
