Violence in hockey games is always in the news, from head injuries in local high school games to the NHL, but this outbreak by an AHL coach surprised me.
The call was a little OTT, taken in the context of just that play, but the player had been rough with the goaltender for the whole game, and I imagine the ref has just had enough and wanted to cool things off before someone got seriously hurt
Video here with clips from throughout the game to see the background, the play and subsequent call is around 2:45 in the video and the coach's outburst about 30 seconds after

Bad calls are a part of sports and coaches really should be above outbursts like this (well everyone should be above outbursts like that regardless of reason) but the fact that he isn't apologetic for his outburst (he did apologise to people with children in the crowds, of which there were many as the game was dedicated to the minor and junior hockey leagues) and says he is not embarrassed by his behaviour - I think that says a lot for the future of hockey

That guy was the coach of the Saint John Flames when they were still here. The team is long gone though. We have the QMJHL Saint John Seadogs now and we're season ticket holders.

I worked with a guy who was an ice hockey player for a local team, and he spent much of his time in the "sin bin" because he was forever fighting.
