Is this hockey violence gone too far?

Violence in hockey games is always in the news, from head injuries in local high school games to the NHL, but this outbreak by an AHL coach surprised me.

The call was a little OTT, taken in the context of just that play, but the player had been rough with the goaltender for the whole game, and I imagine the ref has just had enough and wanted to cool things off before someone got seriously hurt

Video here with clips from throughout the game to see the background, the play and subsequent call is around 2:45 in the video and the coach's outburst about 30 seconds after
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVGMg...layer_embedded

Bad calls are a part of sports and coaches really should be above outbursts like this (well everyone should be above outbursts like that regardless of reason) but the fact that he isn't apologetic for his outburst (he did apologise to people with children in the crowds, of which there were many as the game was dedicated to the minor and junior hockey leagues) and says he is not embarrassed by his behaviour - I think that says a lot for the future of hockey

OMG, that was actually had to laugh at that! I wouldn't have appreciated seeing that in real life though, and certainly not if I had kids there with me.
The refs do have to be free to make their calls, and the coach doesn't have to like them, but that was quite the over-reaction. You would think he'd be embarrassed about it afterwards, but these days people just aren't. They may apologize, but that's usually more a PR thing. Outrageous behaviour is becoming more expected in the public arena, and it seems to me that most people just don't care about living up to accepted standards of behaviour. I know I sound old-fashioned when I say that too.

That guy was the coach of the Saint John Flames when they were still here. The team is long gone though. We have the QMJHL Saint John Seadogs now and we're season ticket holders.

I love, love, LOVE going to the hockey games. Do the coaches sometimes go overboard? Absolutely. Do the players get TOO rough sometimes? For sure. I think a lot of people would say it's part of the excitement of the game though. I'm all for a good hockey fight...however as long as it is equal and not say a check from behind, or just a sucker punch, etc.

I agree, but fighting with the ref will always get you ejected, player or coach

Playfair isn't usually one of the crazier coaches though

I used to enjoy hockey but now it isn't hockey anymore - it's fight night. The old joke - I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.

This type of behaviour would not be tolerated in any other game and I for one do not find it the least bit entertaining. These folks are teaching our children that if you don't like something, it's OK to get violent. Doesn't work for me.

I can't stand hockey!

All it is is a bunch of goons on skates chasing a puck and fighting amongst themselves! Disgusting!

Most people watch for the fights these days than the actual game. And it's such a shame that these values of the game are being passed down to little kids leagues.

I thought it was kind of funny...it reminded me of some of the over the top antics that baseball managers have done on the field when they don't agree with a call.

Poor sportsmanship? Yes.

I don't mind the fighting in hockey. What bothers me is the cheap shots taken after or away from the play. Case in point- Donald Brashear, who is a goon himself, taking the crack over the head from Marty McSorley's stick.

On a side note there are a number of former Cincinnati Cyclones on Hamilton's roster. The Cyclones are Hamilton's ECHL affiliate.

I hate seeing punchups like that I worked with a guy who was an ice hockey player for a local team, and he spent much of his time in the "sin bin" because he was forever fighting.

He was well known in the area and there was one day he was out on a job from work. Two fans from a rival team noticed him because the job he was on was in their area and they spat on him!!

I love it! When these thugs aren't playing hockey they are usually called "bullies" IMO.
