Whisper is my 6 month old Siamese kitten who has been having problems with runny poop. I had them on TOTW and it just didn't agree with either of them. Whisper had diarrhea..no blood and Kiki had constipation. Took Whisper to the vet and she put them both on Prescription Science Diet R/d For four days and switched them to S/D Optimal care dry food. Things were going good until just a few minutes ago. Whisper, I think, (I didn't actually see him go) had very mushy red/brown poop with a streak of blood in it. (Very stinky too) I took him to the vet on March 19 and he had a negative fecal exam.

What do I do? Take him back to the vet, E-vet ...watch him...what???? Any advice would be great.

I think you need a more in depth fecal..checking for giardia and coccida. The next step might be a course of Flagyl (metronidazole).

If he is acting normally otherwise (peeing okay, no lethargy, gums nice and pink) in my opinion (not a vet) this is not an emergency and can wait until morning.

When did these food changes happen, my cats would still have diarrhea if I switched them to a new food for 4 days and then switched them again.

Did you ask your vet why R/D - its a weight reduction food and then S/D which is for Struvite / Urinary Infections or do you mean regular Science Diet regular adult brand?

As Otto said, as long as he isn't lethargic, pale or really red gums, he is playing, not overly constipated or so much diarrhea he could need fluids, and is eating I would probably leave it until morning, but I would certainly check with the vet first thing - but my motto usually is, if I would mention it on TCS, go to the vet

Food changed 10 days ago. Vet said R/D Science Diet wet food for four days b/c it was high fiber and would fix the runny poop. Which it did. Then also Science Diet Optimal Care adult dry food. She said just switch them cold turkey b/c Whisper already had bad diarrhea. She said the worst that could happen was diarrhea so what did I have to loose.

The day after we came home from vet I gave them each 1/2 can wet food once per day in addition to the 3/8 to 5/8 cup dry food per day as per the instructions on the bag.

well if the r/d was to fix it...

If I switched mine between those three foods, I would still be dealing with diarrhea as well as Bumper puking 10 days later too.

I would still mention it to your vet and speak to her about changing to something that has less allergens, in case that is causing it. I would also get another fecal, some parasites do not show in the earlier stages of growth in fecal samples so its always a good idea to do a 2 week followup if there are diarrhea issues

Home from vet. I saw the other vet that I normally see for my cats today. She said fecal exam was negative and checked his mouth, teeth, and said everything looked good. She gave me Panacur C to give him for 3 days and 4 cans of r/d prescription Science Diet wet food to feed in addition to the dry food. If he is still having problems or starts vomiting then she talked about doing a barium series to check for blockage or deformity. She said if the can food fixes it then Whisper may just need to be on a high fiber diet.

Hopefully the can food fixes it and he won't need a barium series. Keeping fingers crossed.
