RIP Doodle, Charlotte, and big tiger guy

This morning, 3 of the older cats at our shelter were put to sleep. Doodle was a pretty calico girl, with a cauliflower ear (probably from a hematoma some time in the past). She looked rough, but she was a lover. She was declawed all around, except for one toe. Her sister, Charlotte, was a blue girl that looked like velvet. They were both 12 years old, and they just weren't going to be adopted. Their original owner brought them in and said she was getting to be allergic to them. (We wondered what her new boyfriend's name is.) We kept them for over 2 months. The big guy looked like a Maine Coon. But he was very scared. I mentioned him in another thread. He had been originally adopted from the shelter 11 years ago. His owner died, and no one in the family would take care of him. He was already skinny and scared, and he just wouldn't eat or drink.

It's starting to be kitten season, and that's a dangerous time for adult cats at the shelter.

I cry for the waste of precious lives, the lonely times those kitties endured who were abandoned by their "owner", the difficulties it must cause to the hearts of those who perform the euthanasia I know the troubles for Doodles, Charlotte & BTG are over, no one can hurt them anymore, and they are safe now, over RB with Joey and Hopehacker, but still, they deserved better
Sending prayers out for blessings and protections for those kitties still in need down here on Earth

There is a huge soft spot in my heart for older kitties in shelters. My heart is broken for those 3 and all the others. How in the world do you endure the heartache?

You are special people to put yourself out there for these precious creatures. I wish I was a billionaire, I'd take them all home.

RIP sweet ones, you were loved at the end.

I don't know how anyone, anyone could dump two twelve year old cats. How can that woman live with herself, I wonder. At least they weren't separated.

How terrible for the big tiger guy to lose his human like that. I guess I will be in tears the rest of the day over what these seniors have suffered in their last months. At least they are no longer suffering.

Dear Ones, know that you are grieved for, by us who never even knew you.

Bless you for caring for these cats when no one else would. I'm about to start crying right here at my desk at work thinking about them.

I was especially fond of Doodle. She didn't like to be picked up, but she would crawl up on your lap or come to the edge of a counter or her cage, put her paws on your chest, and rub and rub on your face. Nice big purr.

Had we not had Flambe, I would have adopted her, probably.

I really hate reading posts like this, where the only things going against these cats is overpopulation and their age.
, babies.

This reality is heartbreaking.

Be at peace little ones.

Spring is a very hard time for shelters who are not no-kill, I always get so nervous come June/July at the shelter here, fearing we will run out of room rapidly & end up euthanizing.

Play happily over the Rainbow Bridge, babies.

RIP precious kitties.

Hopefully Doodle, Charlotte and Big Tiger knew happier days when they were young kitties.

I'm curious, do the people who dump these older cats (as in the case of Doodle and Charlotte) ever come back to check on them, see whether they were adopted? Or, once out of sight, out of mind.

If they do come back, they don't let us know about it.

And if they come back after the cat is gone, we aren't allowed to tell them what was done with the animal.

I am sorry for the loss of these three precious cats. Some people thinks pets are throw-a-ways. Rest in peace sweet kitties. You will never be lonely again.

RIP precious babies!!! Poor dears! At least they knew some love and comfort from you in their final days.

We just pulled together and saved an older stray from that yucky local county pound. Fluffy black and white male, front paw declawed. He was a stray - came in wearing a blue collar with a bell on it Est. age - 12.

A local vet took him in - says he is a GREAT cat... terrible earmites and bad diarrhea... at a minimum.

Are they looking for an owner? Isn't it possible this kitty has been lost and someone is desperately looking for him?

It crossed my mind, except --- he was at the pound for a MONTH and no one came to claim him. The return rate for shelter cats nationwide is really low... something like 2-3 percent. Don't quote me on that...but it is not good.

Sorry to hijack the thread... you can PM me about this if you want.
