First off, Mochi is still in quarantine in the bathroom. The shelter dewormed him 2 weeks ago with Strongid. The vet told me that Strongid is a basic dewormer and we could treat him with a broad spectrum dewormer to cover for more. I went to pick the dewormer up today and he has prescribed Profender.

I tried searching it up on the internet, but I still have some questions.

- What does Profender cover that Strongid does not?
- Are we pretty safe even if we don't give him the Profender? (I don't really like the idea of dosing him with chemicals if it's not needed.)

I don't want to tax his immune system some more especially since he got neutered, vaccinated, and dewormed all at the same time just 2 weeks ago.

And in case it affects anything, I'm bringing in his fecal sample to the vet to check for Giardia and Coccidia tomorrow.

Thanks!

Profender is the topical wormer that covers roundworm, hookworms, & tapeworms. Strongid doesn't cover tapes, which I believe is the major difference. My vet doesn't use Profender, so I can't offer any firsthand experience, just the info I snagged from a quick google search.

With all dewormers, most cats need a second (or even third) dose to get rid of all of the parasites and worms in their system, dewormers only kill the adult stage worms so all of the others carry on growing and stress can activate domant larvae. Kittens can be dewormed at as young as 2 weeks with some Rx dewormers and are generally safe unless the cat has underlying problems.

Did Mochi have worms at the shelter / a fecal done at the vet?

We don't use profender either, so no help there
