I participated last night - I almost forgot but at the time it happened, there was a ticker across the telly reminding us of Earth Hour and so I turned the lights off. If I hadn't seen that, I would have forgotten too!

Almost 24 hours ago for ours, I forgot but participated accidentally as I watched a movie in the dark.

I did by accident. I was out shopping with my sister so I wasn't home and my DH didn't leave any lights on when he left for work.

The power companies say that one hour of reduction like that actually uses more power, due to the necessity of idling down generators and then restarting them.

One day, however, would be a significant difference.

But if that one hour makes people think about their power consumption on a daily basis, it does its job right?

Toronto's electricity company has on online tool where you can sign up to view your daily consumption on an hourly basis to help you reduce consumption. They also make power more expensive during peak hours to encourage people to use power in downtimes

OK, let's examine that.

Let's do something that does NOT help the actual problem, in order to cause people to THINK about the problem.

That's like causing a car accident on TV in order to make people think about driving more safely.

Sadly, sometimes it does take an accident for people to drive more safely

But its about making a stand and proving that we can live without using so much power, plus the number of people who actually take part means that it is little more than typical overnight use for most cities, so the power companies are used to the change in consumption and not who I put high on my list of people to believe in general

How effective is it at making people remember and think about it if even some of the few people replying in this (short) thread so far admittedly forgot?

This is the first year we have NOT participated, mainly because I didn't know about it until I saw the news AFTER the event. Before they used to really emphasize it, and now it's almost a 2nd thought! I'm really bummed because here in Phoenix, even the CITY participates, shutting down everything but the most critical items, and some of the restaurants even serve "green", meaning they don't use electricity to produce their dinners. It's pretty neat!

We usually turn off everything, unplug everything (except the fridge), then go for an hour walk to see how many other people are participating, but unfortunately, last night we had my folks over for dinner, so used more electricity than normal, since we had more lights on than usual, had the stove and oven going, etc. I really feel guilty, because I DO think we, the people of planet earth, can help stop what is happening to this wonderful planet.

I don't participate either. I do my part to be a good citizen of the world. But I don't think turning the lights off for one hour makes any kind of difference.

We heat with wood so we don't use our furnace hardly at all, so I feel I am ahead of the game.
