Easter Lilly Warning!

I know most of us know this, but there may be newbies or others just reading our site who dont.....PLEASE, if you get an Easter Lilly, get rid of it if you have cats.

It is extremely toxic to cats if they injest it. Causes kidney failure and can cause death! Donate it to a hospital or nursing home, but be mindfull that some nursing homes have resident cats.

This info goes for any plant that has the word "lilly" in it too. If you must have indoor plants, please reseach before you bring them home.

Not just easter lilies. Any plant bought this time of year will likely have been fertilized fairly heavily and there are several other easter/spring potted plants that are toxic (like hyacinths, daffodils, and tulips). Think twice about having any of them where a cat can get into them.

I am so glad I looked at this before leaving work. We were going to get some plants today for the house. I love this site! I am learning alot about caring for my baby girl.

Thankyou so much for all the great info. I will look up plants and kittys before I buy anything.

It's easy for one to get overwhelmed by the large amount of toxic plants on toxic plant lists, so how about some non-toxic plant lists for you? http://www.sniksnak.com/plants.html

These are by no means perfect, so double check any plants. And again, they'll have been fertilized in the green house so you need to keep your cat out of the dirt and from chewing on the plant as much as possible (besides, that can kill your plants).

We don't have ANY live plants in the house - much safer that way.

When hubby gives me flowers, I wind up having to take them to work because the cats think its fun to get on the table, knock them over and drag them around the house!

Please remember, it isn't only easter lilies, but MOST members of the lily family (allium sp) that are toxic to pets. This includes stuff people eat too, such as onions and garlic.

Thanks for posting, I learnt this about a year ago when I was reading a magazine with a story about a lady who's cat died and it was from aome lillies someone had bought her. I have over the years had alot of lillies (flowers and plants).I will never buy them again after learning this, I am just grateful that my cats have been ok when I had them. x

Very glad to see this info posted here!

Those Easter lilies are everywhere, and they me shudder when I think about how deadly those pretty flowers are... I'm fairly sure I had a few, despite having cats, when I was much younger and dumber.

We have a produce market near us...I am so tempted to ask them to post signs by these flowers as to their danger to cats.

But then someone would probably think OK, I'll get something else and it could be just as bad!

We dont have lillies full stop im allergic to them

when we were at the florist a week and a bit ago getting some flowers we said to her make sure no lillies as they are very harmful to cats she still tried to getus to have them becasue cats dont bother with them needless to say i wont be back there

yeah i know we dont even plant lillies in the garden, my dad took them out after he found out

Haha, lucky for me, every plant I've ever owned seems to die! No matter how much care I give it!

Thank you for posting the poisonous plants list, a great link to be saved just incase I ever try to grow anything again!
