Met a lady who has a Himmie who is just fine, but she had been feeding him Science Diet Optimal Care and wanted to upgrade his dry food. She tried Royal Canin (not sure which one - don't remember) and Bougie - the cat - didn't like it and won't eat it.

She also has a kitten in the house who is eating RC kitten food and is loving that!

She was at a loss as to what to feed the Himmie. I suggested TOTW but also told her I belong to this wonderful cat forum -- yes YOU GUYS - and told her I would ask.

She is looking for better coat, less shedding, reduced incidence of hairballs. And just a better, overall diet for her boy.

I did suggest fish oil for coat and shedding.

I don't know about budget. I just emailed her back re: that. But RC isn't cheap so I would think she wouldn't mind feeding good stuff.

And no - I didn't lecture yet on the benefits of feeding wet and dry. I didn't get the sense that she uses wet food.

Do not lecture just advise
... Taste is good but likely she is shopping a big box store... have her look at Nutro , Natural balance , Blue and Wellness...

Addie, is she in Michigan? If so, she can probably find a Pet Supplies Plus close to her... Here is the store locator for you.

My store has all the great brands available, they also have the good, bad and the ugly, all very well separated... The best thing about them, is that they will special order whatever you want for you, and charge shelf price, no shipping... That is a great service. I used to do that with ACANA, for example. I know the selection will greatly vary from store to store, but with this service you can get what you want, so you are ahead there.

As far as what is best for a Himmie, I do not have one, but I do have 3 long hairs, and can say what worked best for them.

Orijen - I fed both Orijen regular and 6-fish, and both were wonderful for their coats and health in general. I have fed EVO Herring and Salmon for the last couple of months and that has been great too, especially for Lucky. Her coat looks like glass.

Nutro was so so, nothing special...

As far as wet, Ziwipeak is amazing for Hope in General, for her health and coat.

My cats never EVER mat, shed very little...
Granted, a ragdoll and a DLH (Hope) are very different from himmies, but still, their coats are pristine.

I do see Himmies that are on grain free diets being fed fiber treats, so maybe a diet with a grain and a higher fiber content) would be best... Not sure on this one. I would be curious to hear what Sam has to say...

Oh yes... familiar with PSP. Given his age, don't know if GF would be the best route based on some advice from sharky. Maybe I will PM Sam and ask, in case she doesn't see this post.

Yeah, I am not sure how well persians do with Grain free, and there is the issue of being almost a Senior too... Those are good points... I'll be curious to see what Sam says...

Just looked at the SD Optimal Care ingredient list - yuck! First ingredient is chicken by-product meal. Blech!

Just about anything would be a step up from there. I am wondering if Authority would be a good choice? And they have a senior formula?

I mean SD is $$$ for what it is.

Authority is a decent choice ... and IMHO better than the SD and much less $$

The lady with the Himmie emailed me back. It seems what her cat didn't like was the combination of SD and RC in his bowl. She tried JUST the RC and he couldn't get it in fast enough. He LOVES the Royal Canin!!!

She is still curious to know what WellingtonCats has to say.

She also said she would take me up on my advice about wet food and see if she can get him to eat some.
