He's a ~4 year old outdoor male and ever since he came in last night he's been extremely shy and quiet, and will not let me touch him outside of a few rubs behind his ears.

If I try and pick him up, he goes pretty much limp and doesn't just whimper or cry but kind of howls and has actually hissed at me once or twice, which is the first time he's ever done this.

He's walking fine, although a little slowly, and I have not seen him to try to eat or drink water...I've only been awake for a few minutes.

I'm going to go call the vet, but I was wondering if any of you have any idea at all what this could be!

It could be so many things, from getting in a fight to an ear infection or onset of symptoms from some kind of disease.
The vet is the only one who can give you answers since they can see your cat and we can't

Yes, Bless you for calling the vet. So many people hem and haw around when they should be moving.

Keep us posted!

Let us know what the vet says - and make sure the vet thoroughly feels all over him.

Anything could have happened outside. He could have gotten into something, be getting sick, or he could have been fighting with another cat. The latter can leave puncture wounds that can be easily missed and get infected very quickly.
