Does this sound like he's blocked?

I just noticed Sherman trying to pee and absolutely nothing is coming out. No signs of blood and he hasn't been peeing more than usual lately. Just suddenly nothing.

The poor boy did eat his wet food lunch and I've already scheduled him in to see the vet - we go in less than an hour. (I do not come here, ever, for suggestions on that)

They'll probably keep him overnight since today is surgery day and they'll be pressed to fit him in.

YES it sounds like a block or a partial ... and hopefully the vet will have good news for you

Darn. It was kind of amusing on the phone with the receptionist - she said "we can see him tomorrow morning" and I told her again that he was not peeing at all. She had somebody go in the back and ask. She must have been told rather promptly that he MUST come in today.

I'm sure he'll be all right since I caught it quickly, he is in some pain, though.

What's going on here today??? Everyone has a UTI???

Thank goodness you knew to tell the desk what to check on - and I bet she'll never make that mistake again. Here's hoping to a speedy diagnosis and treatment (and hopefully not too expensive either!)

$130 later - Partial block, cystitis with crystals. Sent home with two weeks of antibiotics and c/d dry and wet.

I knew he had crystals before the vet came in and told me. They took a urine sample and brought him back out, that opened him up and he had to pee. The towel had urine with a clump of crystals on it - like really finely granulated sugar.
I made the mistake of pulling the towel out too soon, though, he still had to go and peed in the carrier. When I looked in he flicked urine off his foot and right into my face.

I just saw your post now and hope he will be ok.

He should be.
As usual, the vet said I caught it before it got bad. I did notice Sherman licking himself late last night and checked his bladder then to make sure it wasn't full. My vet should know by now that I'm pretty much on top of this stuff, though he looked a little surprised that I already knew what to check.

I just hope he eats the c/d without much complaint - the ingredients look bad (typical hills), so with the vet's approval, later (after the acute stuff has settled), I'll want to hunt around a very low ash and magnesium foods (more wet than dry, since he mostly eats wet) that I can actually get without any trouble.

ETA: I shouldn't worry about Sherman being picky. He seems to love the dry c/d a lot.

Oh my goodness more crystals. It's an epidemic!

Hope your boy gets better soon. Oh no, poor you and the urine!!!!

I know Hills CD doesn't look great to a layperson, but if it works, it's good with me. My boy is on CD wet and dry - so far, so good. But working with the vet re alternatives is a good way to go if you do decide to try something else.

Good luck!

^I'm mostly worried what it's going to do to his soft fluffy coat. He moderately sheds now that it's spring, but I don't want his shedding to get worse or for his coat/skin to get dry. My luck, he'd end up with bad hairballs that would require yet another food.

I'm fine with the dry if he has to stay on that. The c/d wet is 1.45 per 5.5oz, a bit high for the quality. No rush, though. it needs to get under control then I chat with the vet about better wet foods.

I am glad that he is on the mend! Poor boy.

Authrity wet has lower mag/ash than Hills... last time I checked. I wouldn't switch foods for 2ish months though. I have one crystal cat that has to have C/D and one that does fine on a low ash/mag reg. food.

^ I wouldn't have thought to look at Petsmart's Authrity wet for that. I did use their kitten food for several months, and was happy with it (I just never get to OKC very often). Maybe that and a few other could at least be cycled in later.

I gave him his wet c/d last night. Maybe it's because I've never fed a wet food with pork, much less pork by-products in it - but is c/d supposed to look and smell as terrible as it does? I don't mean it smells or looks spoiled, just very very wrong compared to any canned food I've ever used. The stuff made me gag. Sherman ate it right up like it was the best thing ever...

Sherman did feel "full" this morning, but he's not out of bed yet (lazy cats) so I'm hoping he can pee when he wakes up later.

Yes, C/D smells gross!

I supposed I'm glad that's normal for it. I did double check the expiration date after opening, thinking "this can't be right".

Mazy does very well on the c/d kibble (she won't eat the canned) her coat is very soft and thick.

I recently began giving her Welactin (fish oil) a couple times of week, vet approved, ( it was for Tolly but he won't touch it) and now her coat has a bit of shine that she didn't have before, ever, regardless of diet.

They do tend to gain weight on the c/d, on the kibble anyway, but I have managed to keep Mazy at a healthy 8.5 pounds with schedule feeding and exercise. She's the liveliest cat in the house, in fact.

Her poops are the smallest and least smelly (in fact almost no odor) of any of the cats, which means the food is not as full of "junk" as it may appear. Her body is using what's in the food, not a lot of waste.

Good job getting Sherman in. For me, once a cat, especially a male, presents with partial block and crystals visible to the eye, I would never feed anything but c/d, ever again.

(I did try twice to switch Mazy to a high quality canned diet of non prescription foods that claim to promote healthy Urine pH and prevent crystals. The crystals always came back)

Oh one more thing. You might want to ask your vet about putting Sherman on cosequin for cats. The cosequin keeps the bladder walls strong and smooth (my unscientific understanding of it) so things don't stick, and the bladder stays flushed.

My two are both eating CD wet and dry, and have nice shiny coats and my boy's poo has actually improved, thank goodness! I've been lucky - my boy absolutely adores the dry and will eat the wet (he's never been big on wet anyway - I got him as an adult), and my girl loves the wet - she'll come running from wherever she is for it.

Maybe his coat will be ok, then. He's a ragdoll look-alike and has that same fluffy coat, I've already some slight issues with hairballs that I headed off before it got worse.

I will ask about the cosequin, if it wouldn't cause any problems for the others I might just give it to them all. I need to restock on fish oil - I'll double check that with the vet as well.

I don't know if he's peed today, yet. He feels like he may have some urine in his bladder but not a full bladder like he did when I took him in.

And thinking about it more, I realized something. When this started bothering him really badly yesterday, he did not drink any water at all. He only drank a little last night. No idea about today, he could have drank a little while I was in the bathroom or not looking. This is why I insist on wet for them all and add extra water to it.

Aw, I hope he isn't getting blocked again.

MANY vibes!!!!
