I see another thread on this has been posted recently but it doesn't answer my question so I'm starting my own.

Mooch is finally feeling better and eating and drinking without encouragement; but I think she might be constipated... **grossness warning** because there is literally a turn in her exit. Like it's holding it open....
She won't let me near it of course....I saw it when she jumped up in my lap... saw and smelled I should say....

When the vet called to check on her this morning I told her I thought she might be a little constipated because DH has found several small crumbly looking ones just outside the box. At that time she said that her drinking water again should help get things going again.

But is there anything I can do to help her in this situation before we make another vet visit? Of course I'll take her in if necessary; but if we can avoid that stress it would be nice.

in the land of poutine and ice
canned pumpkin (not the pie stuff, just plain canned pumpkin or if you can find them, fresh pumpkin smushed up)

milk works for Autumn, but she is not so lactose intolerant that I get the opposite issue

plain old vaseline can work too

I'm not sure that she'll eat pumpkin; so do I dab some vaseline on her nose like I would to help with hairballs?

I showed the vet my tube of hairball remedy today and she said that since Abbey was already clogged up, it probably wouldnt have done much anyway. (We were the ones in with the plugged up issue in the other thread)

I hope you can get Mooch some relief soon, I can't imagine not being able to go like that, and I was pretty shocked into reality about it after seeing the xray.

Just wanted you to know we're thinking about your Mooch too!

I just went through this with my boy a couple of weeks ago. He had to have an enema and was put on lactulose, which we finished yesterday. The only sign I had was regurgitation of food as he was still using the litter box once a day. But the x-ray showed he was full of poop! I agree it was shocking! Unfortunately last night he barfed again but I'm hoping that was a case of him eating too fast since I got home later than normal. I may try some pumpkin if he does it again.

Good luck to you and your Mooch!

I would think that milk might be helpful, since cats like it, so it's easy to give to them, and it gives them the opposite problem so the two would cancel out. Obviously the cat would also need plenty of water to not get dehydrated.

I feed my girl pumpkin twice daily for constipation. She's got kidney problems, and the two often go together. I mix it with her wet food and she loves it.

If she's not pooped, she will throw up. Such joy!

Thanks for your replies! I'm going to at least try the vaseline; but I'm hoping she'll at least be able to get out what is already 'exposed.'

Poor girl had been so sick she didn't want to cuddle. Now she does and she STINKS!!! I'm thinking I need to call the vet in the morning, if they don't call me first. I've talked to my vet daily since last Saturday! (Except Sunday...but pretty much!)

I decided to call the vet tonight since I realized the one location was still open. They gave me an appointment for tomorrow afternoon. Poor Moochie....this will be her 3rd appointment....worms, uti, now this!

I just thought of something...I realize this would be opening up the same can of worms as bathing a cat for any reason, but...if the cat could be convinced to allow her backside to be soaked in warm or lukewarm water, isn't there a chance that the piece blocking her open would dissolve? If she doesn't totally hate being bathed, it might be worth trying, because it can't possibly be comfortable to be wedged open like that.

We've been adding pumpkin to their wet food too. Only Ming Loy and Shelly would eat it plain - but about a tablespoon mixed in with 1/4 can of wet food and a few tablespoons of warm water mixed in - and they all eat it. Gets them the fiber and extra water, and we give it to them once or twice a day.

Oh great idea Laurie! She might go for that! We're headed to the vet in a little bit; but she did eventually get what was wedged in there out. She still looks irritated and I think swollen (as much as she'll let me look) so I'm definitely still taking her in. But in the future I will definitely try that!

Thanks! By morning Mooch had moved out what was visible, but she was still red and sore looking. She did not like the vet looking! The vet said she could feel more in there so gave her an injection there (like her 5th shot in 2 weeks! Poor baby!!) and sent me home with meds for the next week. Mooch doesn't like her meds, but she is acting like herself again, which I love!

Liquid paraffin is very effective. You could say it is the standard treatment for severe constipation. The vets use it too, although they have surely a fancy and costly brand name on it.
Hairball stuff is solved in liquid paraffine of sorts. Vaseline is another variation on the same theme. Both useful as home remedies: most do have them home, but not so many do have home liquid paraffine of good quality.

This canned pumpkin is apparently a extra, wonderful positive advantage with living in America!

Here in Sweden our standard recipe for easier constipation is goat butter. Ie butter made on goat milk. Preferably the norvegian variation..."mess-smor"
If you do have this at your place, try this.

If the cat is lactose intolerant, she may get runny of course. But here it isnt no problem.
