Good morning. It's supposed to be spring, but it's only 30 °F (-1 °C). Today could be called Mental Block Of The Day, because I'm having a hard time coming up with a question...

Here's Today's Question Of The Day.

Since spring is here, and the birds are returning, what is your favorite bird?

I love hummingbirds. I can spend the entire day in the hummingbird aviary at the San Diego Zoo. I've tried putting out hummingbird feeders, but haven't had luck attracting them to my garden. I also love listening to the song of the house wren. I have had luck drawing them in and using the small bird houses that I've put in my trees. Their song is so beautiful in the evening.

When I was a child my grandfather had a beautiful pair of love birds. They were so sweet and gentle. They would coo and cuddle with each other and sing. They were so loyal to one another that when one of them died the other one followed very soon after. Of loneliness and a broken heart, I guess.

I really like woodpeckers and owls. Some nights I sit outside listening to the owls and having a conversation with them. I'm a big fan of eagles, as well. We live very close to the Mississippi River, and eagles feed close-by during the colder months. If it's a really bad winter (lots of ice and snow) I've seen them fly over our house searching for food. That is an amazing sight.

Well, for spring, I love watching the goldfinch males get their mating plumage. I have a couple at the feeder and they are just starting to turn yellow.

But, like my Mom, I love catching a glimpse of the indigo bunting.

Ari says to mention his fave - the mourning dove. He goes crazy when they are at the feeder.

I like eagles, owls, mute swans, ravens and hawks. My old apartment was located in a place where all the returning or moving birds fly over. It was nice, except when the geese made horrible noice day and night..

I would have to say the cardinals. The blazing red of the males just makes such a striking impression. The females are a bit more subdued, but still a pretty shade of green.

I have 2 pet cockatiels so they are my favorites

But! for the outside birds. I have always loved cardinals. They just seem so sweet and gentle. I also really love the smaller birds like the finches and tufted titmice. Not a fan of those mean blue jays, although they are pretty.

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
I like Blue Jays to look at but the birds that chirp and sound like baby kittens meowing are driving me crazy. Im half tempted to let the cats out and go hunting because everytime I go outside with the dog we both are freaking out thinking there are baby kittens around but cant find any.....yet theres 10 million birds around!!!

What I don't know about birds would fill several libraries, but there's a bird around here -- probably quite small, because apart from the crows there's nothing particularly large in the garden variety birds -- that I swear talks in sentences. It is so charming to hear them. It's like listening to one half of a phone conversation. I love those little chatterboxes, even though I have no idea who they are.

And then, of course, there are the eagles. We watched two yesterday afternoon during a meeting, alternately perched atop the "eagle tree" and soaring above English Bay. Awesome.

DH is an avid bird watcher and has a very long list of the birds that he's seen over the years. Locally, I tend to like the birds of prey (owls and hawks) - they are actually entertaining when engaged with other birds. But I also like hummingbirds (we have lots of them in the summer) and the brightly colored ones (orioles and indigo buntings).

The coolest ones I ever saw were toucans, parrots and maccaws living in the wild in Panama.

In 2005, when I lived in a different county (where there's way more birds than here!), I was visited by a blue jay and a cardinal - both in the same month I believe. Oh, they were magnificent animals. Truly. My eyes were glued on them before they flew off.
..... So my answer is the blue jay and the cardinal are my favorite birds.

Id love to say im an avid bird fan but I have had the WORST luck around birds. Never fail, if I go to the beach (mind you, no food in hand but could be down from someone eating away on chips, etc.) the birds spot me. I recently had one to "go" on my head! I thought my friend was being funny and had thrown sand, wrong! I was later told in some cultures that is actually "good luck" to have that happen! Guess I should have gone to the casino that night. Not too long ago I was getting out of the shower, naked as a jay bird (no pun intended) and hear this LOUD TAPPING on my BEDROOM window (back of the house). It kept on and on as if someone were about to break the glass. I finally got the nerve to pull the shade up, IT WAS A FREAKING WOODPECKER who obviously didnt know the difference between WOOD and GLASS!
They just weird me out a little now days.
