Weird Sound

Charlie was producing weird sounds. He would stare at something and then suddenly make this weird sound...I can't call it "meow" because it didn't sound like "meow" it's like "ngow, ngow, ngow" and it was really loud! Sounds like a cow. Quiet funny but it's freaking me out, I often saw him doing it at around 2-4 am.

As of now, I never heard him doing it. I'm wondering what is it...

Cats make weird sounds when they see weird to them things. If he is doing this in the middle of the night, he may see something out the window that attracts his interest, a strange cat for example.

Or he may be carrying a toy around, and making his "I caught my prey, I am mighty hunter" sound. Cats do that, too.

I thought it was something I don't want to see...

My favorite is the "chatter." My Domino does it quite often...I rarely heard any other cat I've had before him do it. He likes to "talk" to the birds outside the window.

Both calicos I've had in my life have done this sort of "Mah! Mah!" when they get excited about something. My fat girl (Carmalita below) used to do this when I put out new food for her (), and Rosalita (also below) did it recently when I introduced her to Butters.

Lola make a very bizarre sounding meow/noise in the middle of the night, when she carries her pompom balls around in her mouth. It sounds rather frightening when it wakes you out of a dead sleep. Imagine a deep yowling cry made with her mouth full!

Ootay (5/09) did too. I called it her dying goose sound. She sounded just terrible, but she was very happy while doing it!

Baby (1/98 ) had an old slipper of mine he liked to drag around and make his "mighty hunter with prey" noises.

Hah, Audrey does this all the time. It's a weird, yowling noise. Very creepy when it's the middle of the night. Invariably after we hear it she shows up carrying something like a dirty sock or one of her mouse toys. Then she wants to play fetch.

Yup. That's chattering.

To MysteryCat - cats make a wide range of noises, not just meow and purrrrrrr!!! My Tex moos and grunts! I finally heard him deliver the classic chattering this morning at the birds at the feeder.

Ghost squeaks and makes noises that sound like a flute and a bulb horn.
