I didn't even get any sedatives.

I would have propably said something about not wanting to end up like Michael Jackson...
Over here it's either MAC anesthesia or versed with percoset. My father had one done back when he was just going into GI medicine. He wanted to know how it would feel with nothing. According to him. the answer is that it's not a lot of fun.

Who wooda thunk?

You guys need to get some better protocols in place. Without sedatives, you risk moving around during the procedure in pain and that could lead to the scope perforating your intestinal wall warranting a bowel resection operation. Having had that operation, I can tell you that you REALLY don't want it.

I'm amazed that no meds is standard there for a colonoscopy.

A lot of countries try to do as little as possible, sometimes it's because they have a more hollistic approach to medicine than the US. I mean, anesthesia isn't all that great for the liver and kidneys...
I had some cavities filled in Bulgaria and they did not give me anesthesia when they had to drill in my tooth to get rid of a cavity..It hurt like hell..
The second time I asked for the anesthesia and paid $10 extra for it
I mean, I would have asked the first time I just didn't know they weren't going to give me any!!
I guess knowing that if I move my tougue would be cut in half, I didn't even think about moving and just endured the pain..

omg ut0pia, that's horrible. Why were you getting a cavity filled in Bulgaria out of curiosity?

As far as anesthesia and liver/kidney issues, that primarily only applies to people with preexisting liver/kidney issues. That's at least my understanding. I'm not a doctor, and I could be wrong. I met with an anesthesiologist yesterday and went through the whole paperwork, consent, release of liability deal. I told them to go heavy on the Midazolam (Versed) as soon as they get the IV started so that I care far less as they start to give me whatever general anesthetic they want to use (it's up to the anesthesiologist, there are several drugs that can be used, I prefer barbiturates because they don't cause the "freak out" effect I've described before, but it's up to the doctor and barbiturates are very dangerous).

My surgery is next Tuesday, early in the morning. I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the worst (pain wise). I have a few ideas for funny things to say, but I'm open to suggestions. I'm also going to see the surgeon on Saturday at a charity walk for the CCFA. I probably won't walk, but I might try. I might just hang out and volunteer to man a booth or something.

Yeah, there were three nurses assisting the doctor, one was holding me still (
) and two were pressing my stomach from the part were the scope was moving so it would move to the right place... It was the most painful experience in my life. And you woud think there are more important things for the nurses to do so why not just give the anesthesia. System sucks.
They do get anesthesia in the private hospitals, but this was public (can't afford the private ones) and they are just awful. Well, atleast children get anesthesia though.

Good Luck for your surgery!

Lol, I was trying to make up for some of that $1500 plane ticket I bought to go overseas and getting my dentist appointment out of the way
It just makes you feel better when you know even though you just spent a fortune on a vacation, at least you got to save some $...
A filling there is like $50 ...granted it's not that expensive here either, I went to the dentist just last month and paid $200 for a filling without dental insurance, which isn't that bad, but it gets really bad if you need crowns or root canals or things like that, which thankfully I've never had done before..
I also get contacts and glasses when I'm overseas, it's like $10 for an eye exam on average, and they use the same machine as they do in the US to calculate your vision. Though that's small savings..

I know i am two years late, but I had surgery and I told them "I forgot my quarters for the anesthesia." As if it were like a parking meter kind of deal

I'm glad to see this thread revived.  I missed it the first time.   When I went in for my quad by-pass surgery,  I said, as they were wheeling me into the surgical suite, "Cool! shiny toys! Can I play with them?"

Last time I had a scheduled procedure, I went in singing that old Ramone's song "I Wanna Be Sedated!" The lovely Indian doc didn't get it, but the nurses and the anesthesiologist thought it was amusing.

Oh, please don't.  The drugs may be good, but the procedures they give them for isn't worth it.  I can think of more enjoyable times to come up with a topper.
