Hi All
My male cat Tigger is about 4 years old. I've had him since a kitten. He has been a chronic vomiter since he was little and recently diagonsed with IBD. We've tried several medications and diets but nothing seemed to work. I finally seem to have found a balance that works. He is getting Taste of the Wild Dry food and Solstice wet food. The dry food in the AM and wet food in the PM. Both diets are grain free but very fish heavy. I know that both these things can be an issue for male cats especially but Tigger has seemed to be doing well for awhile. He's been on this diet for about 4 months and no vomiting and his coat is shiny and he has been really healthy.

He was recently at the vet for a checkup and rabies vaccine. At that time, they tested his urine too just because he's never had a urine test done. The urine test showed that he has alkaline urine. The vet told me it was border line normal and that there was no sign of any other infection or issues at this time. He's not showing any symptoms of UTI or other urinary issues. The vet told me that alkaline urine is a result of diet but told me that it was not an issue at this time just to keep him under observation.

I'm super paranoid about urinary issues with my male cat but also so happy to have found a diet that is working for him and he does not cause him to vomit all the time.

Any suggestions? Should I keep him on the diet that's working and just keep watching/testing for urinary problems or do you feel that the results from this last test are significant enough that I should change his diet? Any suggestions as to what I should change it to?

We have 2 water fountains that he drinks out of regularly and he eats mostly the wet food.

I had the same issues with Bumper with most fish foods, his stomach tolerates them better but he does get UTIs and is horrible at the vets (he behaves but gets so stressed he makes himself worse than what we brought him in for as well as losing half his fur)

He has been doing well on Orijen for both vomiting and UTIs so that is what we are sticking with, but as far as I am concerned, its easier for them to hide their UTI issues than vomiting so I deaal with the UTI issues first.

But if your vet is not concerned, I would just keep monitoring it

my Chip has the opposite problem, in that his urine tends to be acidic. i add brewer's yeast to their wet food - seems to help alkalinize it.
you might try some sort of food additive to acidify the urine, just to forestall any problems...
