Cat traumatised by new puppy (puppy now gone)

My 6 year old cat who previously was the most loving, playful, friendly cat you could ever meet has now really really changed. We had a puppy in the house for 4 days last week - no fights etc between them but obviously the cat wsas not impressed and disappeared outside for the full length of time. She was around but only came into the house to sleep upstairs away from the puppy. She didn't eat for all that time...I am sure she got some mice/water when she was outside but nothing we gave her - even when we put her food outside it was untouched.
Anyway, dog has now gone and my cat is so timid, nervous, unfriendly etc. Doesn't want to be stroked, hides under the beds all day - I just want my adorable cat back! Do you think it will pass and she will go back to how she was before - and should I push her to come out and be stroked etc or just leave her to it and hope that she will eventually realise that the dog has gone for good and it is just her now. I am so sad....
PS She is eating again though

She'll likely return to normal once she realizes the intruder is gone. In the meantime give her extra attention and love, but do not force it if she does not react the way you want.

I agree. Give her time and space and you'll never know the dog was there.

I agree with the other posters that she will return to her own self, and to be there for her, but not force it.

However I will add that I would probably bring her in for a quick check up with the vet if she hasn't shown any improvement in behavior in a few more days. Stress can cause illness in cats, especially urinary tract problems and kidney issues..

Monitor her litter box habits, make sure she is peeing and pooping normally.

You could always get a feliway plug in, to help her feel more centered and secure.

PS Hurray for you for not keeping the puppy. So many people get puppies and decide "the cat has to go" because kitty can't adjust to the puppy. I hate that. Your kitty is a lucky girl and I'm sure with time she will be back to her lovey dovey self.

Welcome to TCS! What's your kitty's name? Please do let us know how she's doing.
