I don't have the full story yet, so some of the details are sketchy. But apparently, a friend of mine (his wife and mine worked at the same place, and he got his job where I work through my recommendation) was on his way to Houston late Thursday night. He came across a big truck rolled over off the side of the road. No one was stopping! It may be that it was out of sight for cars. Anyway, he stopped to check on the driver. No one had stopped, and no one knows how long it had been there. Anyway, he crawled around on the mashed-up cab and found the driver trapped in the wreckage. When he saw Chris, he started sobbing and begging for help. Chris called out the police and stayed with the guy until Lifeflight arrived to take him to the hospital. We haven't heard how he made out, yet, but the opinion of the first responders was that Chris had saved the driver's life.

I've stopped at a lot of accidents that everyone else was just driving by. And I've discovered several accidents that were unnoticed. I once went past one at night before I realized what I had just seen, and stopped as soon as I could to call out the police. It was a car that had rolled over and they stopped well off the highway in Nevada. I heard on my scanner that there was at least one person alive in the car when the sheriff got there.

It drove my wife crazy, but I couldn't have lived with myself otherwise. Most truckers are the same; if you have a serious accident on the interstate, the odds are good that it will be a trucker who first stops to help you.

All that said, we had a friend who was killed assisting at an accident, and another who died from hepatitis C that he got from a blood transfusion after he was shot when he stopped to help a woman having a baby, and it turned out to be a fake and a robbery.
