Vibes needed for Mom and brand new kittens!

So I went in to the shelter this afternoon as the last of my baby foster kittens was going to her new forever home today and I was told about a Mom they had there who gave birth on the adoption floor yesterday to 4 beautiful little babies! They didn't know she was pregnant! Of COURSE I offered to foster them. Please keep them all in your thoughts, especially the little runt who is struggling a bit. I've named the Mom Sienna. She's a DLH brown tabby and she has 2 DSH tabbies and 2 DSH black and whites.

What an excellent opportunity! You didn't even get a chance to be sad about your other ones leaving

I would be so happy to do it too. I did foster a mom and her 4 newborns (2 days old) about 5 years ago from the SPCA and my daughter loved the entire experience as it was her first time seeing babies. She's a crazy cat lady in the making, I'll tell ya!

Good luck with the new arrivals. The runty little one just needs extra supplementation, as I'm sure you full well know

Thank you all. Unfortunately as predicted we lost the little runt tonight. She just wasn't strong enough at all. Please continue to keep the rest in your thoughts. This is the hardest part of being a foster mom, and something I can never, ever get used to.

I'm so sorry for your loss but there was nothing you could have done, and your giving them all the best chance they could have. That's the one hard part about fostering- when the moms and/or babies have lived outside, and they don't end up as healthy sometimes
Still thinking about the others though!

Thank you hun. I have been through this many times before, but no matter what anyone says it never gets any easier. The good news is Sienna and the remaining 3 babies all seem to be doing well this morning. The kittens are so tiny but absolutely beautiful.

It always breaks by heart too... The first time I fostered, we had a mom who gave birth to two kittens- a few days later the shelter called and said that they had another little guy who'd been born on someones deck, then the mom had just ran off, had been brought in. He was born the same day as our guys(and looked the same too!), so they were hoping out mom cat would take him in. I was really excited, but when they brought him over he was so much smaller than our two...and the next morning he had died I'd never even thought of that, so it was a big shock to me. But, as I got more kittens, I learned to cope a bit better with the loses...but I've definatly had some sad experiences...
Anyway, I'm thinking about your three little guys!

It is REALLY nice to be able to talk with others who have been through it and know what it's like. I just checked on the family and the remaining 3 babies and Mom, Sienna, are all doing well. Sienna has NO problem with me handling her babies and she is very affectionate. First glances makes me believe we have a big girl (white with black spots) and 2 smaller boys (a grey tabby with white and a mostly black and white tuxie). They are SO FRICKEN' sweet! Sienna is eating well and is doing very well being a mom and taking care of her little ones. I'll take pictures in a couple of days after they are more settled, but keep checking back because I promise to provide lots of updates on their progress.

I know, I love it! I can't wait until we get our first litter this year...it shouldn't be too long, since the snow's almost all gone Your babies sound so cute! What colour is Sienna? Any name idea's yet?(It usually takes me until their half grown to get the perfect names)

I'm actually thinking of names for the babies right now! Sienna looks nothing like her kittens. She's a DLH brown tabby and actually looks like a female version of my Shadey. (My bf, Dana, keeps calling her Lady Shadey. ) She is such a sweetheart too.

She must be so pretty! I have only had two litters of kittens where they haven't all looked the same, and this is my fourth year fostering I remember once when we went to the shelter, there was a calico mom, and she had 5 kittens, and all 5 of them were pure white! I've always wanted a pure white kitten, but no luck yet

Well Dana has decided that HE wanted to name these kittens and has named them Marsha, Tony and Bill. All are still doing very well as of this morning!

While I dont foster kittens, I have had losses with foster cats, and to me, the day you get used to losing a cat is the day you should stop doing rescue work. Good luck with them

Sienna and her beautiful babies (who I have nicknamed "The Itty Bitties ") all continue to do VERY well. The kittens are all spry, vocal and beyond adorable. Dana and I are in love already. Sienna is a great Mom, very attentive to the kittens but is fine with us handling them. We were a little worried at first that she was going to develope an URI which is common with our shelter fosters as she was a little sniffly when we brought her home but THANKFULLY she seems fine now.

Aww! I'm so jelous of you right now I want some babies!

Thanks goodness she didn't! I had a really bad incedent with a pregnant mom with URI...she got sick and wouldn't eat...we thought she was just overdue but wasn't having them(she was HUGE...look at this pic!http://i43.tinypic.com/2gxmf08.jpg ), so we took her to the vet and it turned out she had URI, and because her nose was stuffed up, she couldn't smell, and wouldn't eat. Anyway, she had them a few hours after the vet, and she had 8! But, since she was sick, the vet thought that she probably didn't have the amunities to give to her kittens, and they got the URI too, and 5 died

WOW, she WAS huge. Poor little thing... Almost every cat I have fostered through the shelter has come with an URI. Teyah had one when we were fostering her and only 1 of her 3 kittens made it. It was SO heartbreaking. Luckily Sienna seems to be just fine, and I am keeping my fingers crossed that it stays this way.

Yeah, that's the one thing about shelters- the way sickness spreads so quick
When Boots(that mommy) had hers, she only had four to start, and we thought she might be done, but 4 more came at 4 ocklock in the morning...it was a good thing I happened to wake up and check on them at that point, because she didn't do anything like breaking the sack or cutting the cord...

Usually when they make it past the first wekks they're fine- how old are your little ones now?
